Either we have a dodgy car or reviews weve read cant be true so would really appreciate your help.

We have a td5 2.5 auto disco and it really struggles up hill and gets overheated. Pulling 505 with 450kg pony in.

Do yours feel the strain up hill / overheat / conk out ?

thanks

I can pull two 16.2hh in my Ifor 510 up a steep hill with my discovery and you'd hardly know they were there. I'd get it checked!

How old is your Disco? Mine is a 2001 and does the job just fine with a HB510 and horse, allthough I do have to toe it a bit before the start of a hill but it never overheats or cuts out or anything like that.

Maybe yours needs a bit of an overhaul.

Mine was fine up hills with a 510 and two heavy cobs, hardly noticed the trailer was on.

It did struggle and overheat when the cylinder head gasket has gone though.

Crikes no mine towed beautifully I had to keep checking trailer was still attached never had issues with it overheating either.
I would certainly look at getting yours checked.

I think I'd get the turbo looked at. I split a turbo hose on my old one the lack of power was obvious. 2.5 is quite a small engine though and I definitely know when I'm towing, slower acceleration and not as lively.

That definately doesn't sound right so I would get it checked. O had a Disco and although I had lots of other complaints about it struggling to tow was definately not one of them.

my vote would also be on one of turbo gorn, head gasket issues or one or more cylinders not firing properly.

garage I think!

a trailer and one horse shouldnt be more than a steady load for a Disco....

Definately get it checked. Its one of the best towers around usually. Our R reg still copes fine with pulling two big fat irish hunters around. Never pulled with an auto though - wonder if that has any affect?

I'd get the car checked out. Find a local landrover specialist that has the diagnostic software for your car and get the car plugged in.
It could be all manor of problems but it could be a fueling or cooling issue that needs sorted.
If it was a turbo then I would have thought you would had lack of power no matter what on board. And if it was a head gasket then it would again overheat all the time.

Hope that is of some help to you. If you need anything else then feel free to pm me.

I used to have a Disco 2.5TD and towed a HB510 with a 17.3hh HW in it, and I must admit it used to struggle uphill and had little or no 'pull'......

I also used to tow with a Mitsubishi Pajero, and much preferred this to the Disco - maybe I had a dodgy Disco, I dunno.

Mechanic husband has just come home and says that auto discovery should tow as well or better than the manual one. He says either something is wrong with the discovery or the brakes on the trailer are sticking...?
