Hi :)

I have now been broken for 13 weeks (ankle) and I'm starting to get about a wee bit more. Since my accident nothing fits :( My boots don't fit my bad ankle and my jods are too small, gained a lot of weight :(

I'm looking for new bits and bobs. I need suggestions for riding boots that support, wellies that grip so I feel safe and jods that will keep me warm and help support my ankle. Cosy socks too!

I'm terrified of a re-break and with winter coming in I need to feel safe. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I didn't used to think about mud/ice etc before, I just got on with it, but now....:(

I feel your pain...I have just earned my first set of crutches after a fall yesterday. Luckily not broken, just badly sprained. My foot is freezing & I can't move it yet to get the circulation going. Hope you heal quickly x x x

Hey..pleased your on the mend.
If you need a few bits n bobs but without spending loads..try the Robinsons winter jods. Cheap as chips but right cosy. I have had a pair for years that I dig out come this weather. Can't remember their exact name..but they come in black are are only jods not breeches.
Not much else to suggest but I use vet-wrap to support my ankles. Maybe then a pair of muckers. You will be slinky and fitting your old stuff soon I am sure.
Try to relax when your walking about..as being tense makes breaks more inevitable as your stiff. Easier said than done.
Take care xx

For warmth I would recomend a pair of winter full chaps (or suede ones are pretty good, but need to be worn a fair bit to keep them soft). Country boots are pretty good for being grippy, there are some cheap ones about and probably give a bit more support than wellies. Glad to hear that you are on the mend and getting out and about again. :)

have you considered proper ankle supports??? that way the ankle(s) will be supported correctly, esp when riding or doing lots of walking!!!

TandD I mentioned this to my physio and she said not to get supports as it stops the natural build up of muscle again. i thought supports would be the best idea.

I'm walking so carefully like a toddler really.

Thank you for your replies :) x

Sorry to read about your ankle, and glad you are able to get about now.

I use muck boots as my 'everything outside boots', and I find they are really good on snow and icy surfaces, the straps are adjustable so I can wear a pair of really thick walking socks as well so that my feet stay nice and warm in the worst of the weather.

I have fairly knackered ankles from breaking them and find the best thing is leather long boots - I have moutain horse ones and find that they are supportive round the foot and round my upper leg providing support to my ankle that way without being tight and restrictive on my ankles themselves. I find that I can go through pretty deep and wet mud without any bother and they are nice and grippy as well as being nice to ride in.
I wouldn't worry too much about re-breaking so long as you take things easy for a while - the broken area will actually be stronger than it was because of the extra bone your body puts down to heal the original break, but this does take time.

Another thing would be look at some of those crampon type things you can put over shoes such as Yak Trax for use in snow/icy conditions.

Heater socks for warm feet
good tractor soled wellies for grip
tights under your trousers for leg warmth
I broke my ankle in summer but was back at the horses within days as there was no one else to do them I did have a driver as I wasnt allowed to drive but basically I had to get on with it rest as much as possible between checking and poo picking
Did struggle a bit with the wheelbarrow and crutches though. The break in my ankle needed to be weight bearing after the first few days so it made balancing on the crutches easier. Took me a bit of time to get off the crutches even once out of plaster though.
I still fear falling I will say that I do fall quite often as the same accident smashed my knee which was missed by the hospital for 5 months by which time the only cure was a replacement which I hope to have next spring as I cant be off my feet until it is light at night and OH can do them after work
