Hi,

My horse is currently on part livery (everything done except worked) and I am thinking about renting my own field and stable close to where I live and 'do it myself'. I have been around horses for over 20years and I teach Pony Club at the local riding school as well as work at the livery yard/Riding School at weekends so there is absolutely no concern that I won't be able to look after him!

Anyway back to the point, for those that rent their own field/stable, roughly how much do you spend on your horse per month? I'd like to get a rough idea before I decide what to do.

Also do you manage with just having the one field or do you really need more than one?

I have a 16.2hh TB and he would have a teeny Welsh Sec A pony for company.

Thanks everyone

I used to have my own field and rebuilt the stable that was there as it was falling down. It cost me the same in feed, hay, shoe's ect but my field was £20 a week.

If it needed fencing, maintanance, ect I had to pay for it. So the most expensive thing was the first set up, i.e rebuilding the stable and getting a load of fencing to seperate the field so I had winter turn out and summer turnout. It was a big field, so I could give parts of it to rest.

I loved it as me and my horse could do what we wanted when and how we wanted!! I would do it agian if I could.

Good luck with it.

Bit hard to break down really.....I have 3 stables and a field with good fencing and secure storage. I pay £40 pw rent. I buy a large round of good quality hay for £32 which is currently lasting about a week in the stables and field.

Obviously theres straw, shoes, feed, insurance, wormers, routine injections.`

Go for it...its lovely having your own place:D

I rent a 4.5 acre field, and 2 corrals (places to put them if need but they are not stables!). The fencing has to be maintained by the landlord. We strip the field throughout the year so there is always part of it having a rest. My 3 live out 24/7. (it also states in the contract that it is to be harrowed and rolled twice a year - landlord manages.) We have a good deal really.

I rent 8 acres, 2 stables and outbuildings for my gang of 5. There is no way I could afford to keep 5 if I had them all on livery (even the most basic, grass livery). Renting is by far the most cost effective option for me, even after paying for all the extras. Okay, so I don't have a menage, but that's something I can live without!

For me, however, cost isn't everything. Far and away more important to me is the freedom I have to do things to my own timetable, to keep my horses in the way I feel is best for them, to make my own decisions. Without even considering the money aspect, I can say that I absolutely have no intention of going back to a livery yard again.

(And when I was years ago on livery - had less horses then - it wasn't a bad yard, so it's not as if I'm holding any grudges either!)

I rent my field its a 25acre plot split into sections at £10pw an acre with running water. you have to do fencing and build stables if you want them (nothing permenant thou).
I love being able to what i want at what times i want with my horses

I rent a large field around 5 acres maybe a bit more. Have a large field shelther big enough for 2 horses a shed to keep my tack etc this is 25 p/w. My hay for big round bale is 20 pound and its 8 pound for a bigbale of oat straw. In the winter i fed a mix of hay and straw and also used the straw for in the field shelter for a bed. Any fence repairs needed is up to us to do. I love it at least you have everything how you want it and none of your things go missing!!!! Id go for it.
