Just phoned up about towinf lessons... 2 day course and test on the third day costs £500!!!!! So I'm thinking I might just teach myself through practising in tjhe field and then take the test. What do I need to be able to do?

i havent taken it, but i think reversing in between cones is something you need to be able to do, and doing a slalem between cones (if you see what i mean?)
i imagine so long as you can reverse well you'd get alot of brownie points!
and thats seems really expensive

They look at all sorts of things we have all forgotten about re general driving, and then for manouvres there is the emergency stop, the reverse exercise, hitch/unhitch, then the technical questions the ask you, in addition to the general drive. I did the course for that price and it was worth the money, as they got me through on my first go!

No slalom that I know of, but the reverse exercise does use cones - you can probably find a diagram somewhere of exactly what you need to do.

I took my test last month and passed YAY.Well the test consists of left hand reverse, a controlled stop from 20mph, 50min drive out on different types of roads including up hill starts, down hill starts, parking, then youll return to the test centre and unhitch/hitch up.

It wasnt as bad as I imagined it to be. The main think is mirrors, mirrors, mirrors. I got 3 minors - 2 for not checking my mirrors before signalling and 1 for speeding.

If you have someone who can tow already then why not get your L plates on and start going out and about? I would seriously recommend getting a few lessons before you sit your test.

You do really need to take at least one training session. I found that although Id been driving trailers for years (dont ask!), what they required in the test was totally different! Its just like if you took your normal car test now, I bet a lot of us would fail as we get into bad habits and dont do the really petty things like holding the steering wheel in the right places for example!!

In my test - I had to reverse park (actually bloody difficult when in a stressful test situation!) which involves reversing across the 'road' (dodging stupidly placed cones as you go) and then finishing in a parking bay. You have to do an emergency stop, moving away on a downward and uphill hill, moving up and down through the gears (in one go) and general driving about a town and country. They're very over-the-top with regard to your visual checks you obviously have to do it all in the right order etc.! Was over the moon when I passed (3rd time!) coz it was such a load of crap and I learnt absolutely nothing from it TBH!
