For those who want Horse Slaughter in the UK Banned

Your cause is good but your link is outdated. The slaughterhouses in the US are all shut down now and the link states that we have three here.

There is no argument that closing them all was a bad move for horse welfare though. As a result of them all closing the horses have suffered far more abuse in the way of being left alive neglected or travelling a much further distance to Mexico or Canada to see the same fate.

I would rather have seen them kept open here and humanely regualted.

As for the US slaughter houses flavoring the horse meat with beef and selling it as such...I highly doubt it

ets: I re read the article and see that the beef flavoring was happening in Mexico. I cannot say weather this is true or not but far more likely to happen there than here

I always thought it was the height of hypocrisy to say, "WE don't kill horses here!" . . . no, you just send them miles away to die with someone else to do the dirty work. So much more civilised.

Sorry, I have issues. To my way of thinking taking responsibility for something - let alone a living thing - means taking responsibility for it even when the task gets upsetting or distasteful.

I would have had a great deal more respect for the Americans banning horse slaughter if they'd at least made an effort to provide a viable alternative or even made an attempt to deal with the situation of "unwanted" horses before that point. I doubt such efforts would have been realistic or practical but to not even make the effort and be all so proud for having taken such a giant, humane step . . .

Not very many horse people in America are "proud" of any ban here

The people who are "proud" are well meaning animal rights activists that did not entirely think the after effects through.

The only thing I think is the height of hypocricy are people who do not want the slaughter of horses for others to eat yet happily munch on a cheeseburger

for all of these vidoes shown in horse slaughter houses of cruelty are a million more of pigs, chickens and cattle and why are these places not shutting down?

At least in America we have humane laws. I am not saying that bad things do not happen to animals here but there ARE laws here to protect them and MOST people here care a great deal and would not allow thier horses to get into this situation. Many many places in this world do not even have minimal regulations or care on their behaf

In every part of the world there are irresponsible morons who care about as much for the life of an animal as they do a piece of trash. When a buck can be made by these type of people they will take the opportunity. No ban on anything will stop that.

The good news is that with gas prices so high in America now not many people will find profit in the transport of horses for meat out of the country. This may eventually slow the overbreeding of bad quality and unwanted horses that wind up for slaughter and help matters a bit. The bad news is that there will be a period of neglect and hardship for the ones left here now until it all settles.

I have no doubts at all that the majority of American horse lovers realised the implications of shutting down the slaughterhouses for horses, and that it was purely the animal rights activists who did not think it through properly. This post was not meant to be a pop at Americans, rather for those in this country who, like the american activists, think that if we close down our slaughterhouses, no horses will be killed. Did not realise the link was out of date, should have read it more thoroughly!

Also do not have an issue with people eating horsemeat, as long as they are killed humanely and don't end up like the american horses being shipped in foul conditions to some far flung place, where humane laws are less than perfect.

I also agree that the US has some of the most stringent animal laws and is also not afraid to prosecute accordingly, something this country could take some guidance on. This was not my issue, as I said, my issue is the shortsightedness of those wishing to ban slaughter, regardless of which continent they are on.

Also agree that there are ar@eholes with no respect for animals in every country of the world.

Glad to hear that the oil price rises have made it less profitable for the killer buyers.

And I am 100% agreeing with you and think it is a very valid point you make. I was just ranting on about things that are on my mind about this issue and never assumed you were implying anything negative by any comment I may have made.

I wish there was no need for horses to be slaughtered

BUT as there is a need I sincerely hope properly regulated premises with efficient slaughtermen ,like Potters Bar, are allowed to continue.

I agree totally our (as in UK) horses should be slaughtered in the UK I would like to see that for all cattle, sheep and pigs too.

It is horrendous that some think close the slaughter houses and the problem goes away...

I have seen the video of Potters and thought how much nicer it was than I was led to believe by the bunny huggers

I wish everyone was vegetarian or vegan like me and there was no need to kill animals! Although I'm classed as an animal activist and work for many organisations I'm not that naive and know the need for meat and by products will never end!! Although I wish for the animals sakes it would! I would rather humane slaughter and it makes my blood boil seeing what actually happens to so many animals worldwide and the abuse and torture they suffer just to be killed and eaten by humans, knowing a lot of the trauma could be avoided if enough people spoke out and more regulations (stricter ones) were put into place and adhered to!

And do you think the farmers would pay to keep cows and sheep just for people to go look at

if everyone was a vegan 99.9% of all the animals would be killed

Sorry the first sentence just really got my back up

..

I try to always buy locally produced meat that can be traced to source (not always possible) and if I could I would buy milk straight from the cow.. If only live export was stopped then our animals could be slaughtered in a controlled manner with some respect

No worries. I just wish animals didn't have to go through the pain and fear that they do and would like measures put in place to restrict this. Especially the live transport of animals in these appauling conditions.

I know there's a good bunch of people on here!! Jadewisc I agree, if you feel so strongly you could get in touch with an organisation like PETA, that's if you already haven't.

Thats why I only buy free range eggs (and yes I read the small print to be double sure) and chickens organic free roaming chickens for meat..
I do go to some extremes though in only buying organic milk, cheese & butter to ensure the cattle are allowed out when the weather allows as we have a horrid place locally where the cows are shut in 24/7

I feel strongly but I do my part in my own way. I raise my own eggs and take care of the animals I have above and beyond. I am not beyond being a hypocrite at times though and do buy some store bought meat although I know I should not. I do the best I can and my heart is in the right place . Not quite ready to join the ALF but consider myself as good a person by the animals as I can be
