Many on here tell us YO's how they would run their yards if they were us.....so here's a very short little poll for you to have your say.

Imagine you are a yard owner - what would you do if you had new horses coming to your yard? There will be a follow-up post a little later

I'd probably make a CRAP YO

I think I'd only quarantine a horse if it came on the yard with a questionable vaccination record.... On the other hand, perhaps I shouldn't let a horse with a questionable vaccination record on the yard at all!!
I'd like to see the horses who come onto our yard quarantined, if only because FAR too many are allowed on with no jabs. At least now they have to have had a Coggins test before being allowed on.

I would worm it as soon as it got to yard then keep it in for 24 hours. I would check passport for vaccinations and foolow up references prior to turning horse out with existing herd. Having sadi that i woudln't want to run my own yarda nd I take my hat off to all the YO's and YM's out there. Most of them do a grand all be it very difficult job. It must be hard to please so many people.

I'm not sure, when new horses arrive I would expect them to be wormed asap and then kept in for 24/84 hrs. Although would want all jabs up to date etc before they went out with mine or the other horses.
Although after witnessing some of the rubbish some lovely YOs put up with i would never want to be a YO myself.

PS. I don't accept grown horses who have not been vaccinated; I do accept foals who are about to be vaccinated though. All new animals on my yard are wormed immediately on arrival.

OMG - i wouldnt be a YO for all the tea in china - Hats off to them all coz without them people like me couldnt have a horse to squeeze!!! (see ITS OFFICAL POST!!!!!!!!!)

Immediate quarantine (separate field where can't touch other horses) for two weeks to check strangles free. Strangles can go through the whole yard and no one can go to shows/leave/hack out for months, then any land that's had strangles horses on is contaminated for a period of time. Safer to quarantine!

Just to add though - no wish ever to be a YO!

i wouldnt want to own a yard, but id put new arrivals in immediat quarantine for 2 or 3 weeks due to the strangles risk, and if werent vaccinated they wouldnt be on the yard at all.

As a YO Im interested to see where this post leads! We seem to be a 'necessary evil' in a lot of peoples eyes. In my opinion, most horse owners wouldnt last 5 mins if the onerous task of being YO was theirs! Mairi.

Isolation for 1 week, 2 if any outward signs of infection. All new horses blood tested within a couple of days of arrival.
Willaccept horses that arent flu vaccinated (I really dont believe it makes a lot of difference), and wont start vaccinations on anything that is in work. Everything has to be Tet covered.

If I ruled the world (OK my own yard) I would insist on isolation for a week and would want to see vac records and passport, and would worm on arrival unless I had hard evidence that the horse had just been wormed.

Isolation for two weeks, wormed on arrival and vaccs checked too.....

Old yard owner used to just throw things out into field, no quarantine, no strict worming programme..... suprosed nothing nasty went round the yard!

I'm pretty sure you're meant to isolate them, but have NEVER been to a yard where this happens, indeed some yards don't even worm them. Generally the yards I've been to worm on arrival then keep in for 48hrs before turning out with the other horses.

I would first ask to see it's worming and vaccination records. I would worm it the day it arrived and then put it in own field for 2weeks (within sight of other horses) then if all ok turn out as normal with other horses

Interesting thread. Quite funny how when you throw a question over to liveries - they suddenly would hate to run a yard lol
Some ideas - turning a horse in a field by itself for two weeks?? Might be nice if you knew you would have a fence at the end of it! even if horses are in sight (and prob even more likely) the horse will try and get to them. then that becomes a huge danager - most horses wont accept being alone, they are after all herd animals. You have to remember - that just because one horse is ok alone, or maybe respect electric fencing - not all do and especially with new liveries - you dont know what the horse is capable of!
