Continuing my wintering out theme - could you recommend good turnouts please? Money isn't really an issue (well, it's not like I'm going to buy one every week is it

Horse in question is 16.1hh, quite compact but substantial if that makes sense!

mine lives out 24/7

she's in the pics below - substantial 16hh but long...
she has a HW weatherbeeter combo (orican maybe?) on colder days she has a fleece rug or LW stable rug on under... or both if baltic like last year!
i do use a bossy's bib on her though in case of rubs (my pet hate!) and she doesn't get any with them - also stops the fleece from slipping back

ETA - she's clipped in winter (blanket clip) and i'm not all that far from you

I have mainly weatherbeetas for my lot, which have never rubbed or leaked, but have a couple from premier equine too which also seem good (although I've heard some moans about them on here so I've maybe just been lucky!) I've always liked the look of the Rambo rugs but they're pretty expensive - I'd rather have two of a slightly cheaper make that I can swop if they get really wet and heavy.

Mine are without necks - combos always rub out manes!! Mine have been fine without necks - obviously not as harsh as the weather there though - but my friend used to put a stretchy hood on hers to keep him a bit warmer but mainly cleaner (he was a TB that spent most of the winter with mud sausages instead of a mane.....

TBH honest I think they do fine without necks - just one more thing to get wrecked and she won't be clipped will she?

The premier Equine ones are good but last winter I brought a Bucas turnout (and will buy for the others this winter). It was brilliant. They have a huge temperature range so one rug can easily do what a middleweight and heavy weight would normally. It hasn't rubbed anywhere. Has a detachable neck if required that doesn't lift up in the wind (like you in a coastal area so we get some horrendus wind).

I can't rate them highly enough!!

Bucas and Fal are my faves- although my YO swears by preier Equine and I have to say they do look good. The bucas and the Fal never rubbed my 16hh WB x ID who was 'substantial'.

I always have Rambo rugs. More expensive but last a lot longer and seem to "stick" iykwim!!

The only problem I have ever had, was with the combo rugs rubbing manes off!! This year, no necks on the rugs I think is the lesson there!!!

my main thing would be, get a few turnouts as that way you can change them if needed etc. So maybe go for a cheaper brand and buy two rather than say 1 Fal etc?
I would def say one without a neck cover if you want to keep the mane intact! Maybe get one with an optional neck cover than you can put it on for the odd day if you feel its needed?

I have amigo's which i love, normally have a neck on them but have never had a problem with rubbed manes, i also just bought a rhino heavy weight for this year, it was really cheap in the robinsons sale.
Tend to watch fo bargains on a lot of the websites.

I second Premier Equine, I've got one of their middle weight rugs & it's a lovely, light & well made rug.
I also bought 2 cheap heavy weight, full neck, turn out rugs from Hyperdrug; I think I paid around £54 each for them but they've got them on sale for £45 at the moment. They are also nice rugs & good value for money.
I've got a uncliped 29 year old & a blanket clipped anglo arab who both lived out through that really cold spell we had last year wearing just their Hyperdrug rugs & they were fine.
I've had a Rambo rug in the past I didn't get on with it at all, it barely fitted my horse, she wears a 6 foot in every make but the Rambo 6 foot was too small for her. The zip on the neck cover was also very stiff & hard to do up & undo, I'd never get another one.

I used a Premier Equine 450g for the wimp when it was super cold and wet, she had Weatherbeeta Arions for the more stable weather, I think they are 350g and I didn't have the full neck just the high necks.

Rambo Duo is brilliant. Outer is light enough to use on its own and will dry quickly. I have 100g and 300g liners, which go in the washing machine occasionally when they get too grim! Neck covers have never rubbed either of my horses, although they are detatchable so needn't use them every day. Both my horses are keen rollers and these rugs never move.
