Just wondering who you insure your quad bike with?

We are just about to buy one next week and I am slightly paranoid that they are a popular thing to steal and want to insure it asap.

Am I right in thinking to just put it on the household insurance as it will be kept locked up in our barn at home? Or is there someone who would do specific insurance for quads? I have no idea!!

Don't need to insure it for road use as it will just be used at home for maintenance etc.

Also, does anyone have any top tips for securing a quad, other than the most basic of keeping it in a locked building?

Any suggestions will be gratefully received, thank you

Our quads were just included on the farm insurance through the NFU.

We were very lucky as ours were kept in a stable and we were lucky I think that they were never stolen.

Our neighbour has theirs chained to a pole in a locked barn and they have still had them stolen!

If they want to steal them, they will. Most have cordless angle grinders these days. Your best bet is to aim for delay. Put the quad in a shed and secure it to a ring bolt in a concrete floor with a steel chain. Equally large chain and padlock on the door.

Nothing beats a very noisy dog, in my opinion, except perhaps CCTV. I'm not sure that my quad is insured as I seem to remember it was going to be very expensive. I'll be collecting my second GSD in January….

The best thing to do is to get it professionally fitted with a tracker device. If you buy your quad off a professional dealer they can advise you regarding this. Most companies will not insure quads as they are so readily stolen. There are various different devices some better than others and they are worth investing in. You can also use things like Smart Water UV marking systems, your local rural crime police officer can help you with this. You also would do well to alarm your buildings, there are some good wireless alarm systems available. I learnt the hard way having my first quad stolen despite having 3 dogs on the premises. The padlocked gates were cut and the bolted barn doors forced. I found my quad on eBay, identified the seller to the police who failed to prosecute him despite his admission of handling my quad, because he didn't still have it in his possession by the time they raided him. It cost me a new machine (now fitted with Tracker) and a £4,000 alarm system. The only thing they came for was the quad. They left other exoensive machines like compressors, welders etc. What particularly galls me is the 'handler' is still selling quads, trailers & other machinery on eBay under 8 different names. Probably all stolen. The main thing is don't leave it on view and advertise you have it. Put it away as soon as you have used it and make sure you lock it up as securely as you can. Hope this helps.

Ours isn't insured, but is stored in a locked barn in a padlocked stable, so even hot-wiring it it would be a hassle to get out... and barn is by house so very obvious if someone broke in!

This is no insurance. Our barn is next to the house about 20 feet from the house door and the night our quad was stolen we had the bedroom windows open as it was summer. The gate padlocks were cut, the barn doors forced and the quad was pushed down the drive & loaded onto a waiting vehicle as we could see the tyre tracks the next morning. Quads are stolen to order by professional criminals. Don't take for granted that a few padlocks, locks & bolts will keep them out. Fit a tracker - it's the only sure way. The tracker system I have links into police cars & helicopters once activated. It was expensive, but the retrieval rate has been 100% from this system. It costs about £500 to have it fitted and £350 (I think) for lifetime registration. I really loath quad thieves as they think they are luxury items, but for me mine is a workhorse used several times every day to manage my smallholding. I work hard to buy the things I want to help me on a daily basis and for some low life to walk in and help themselves to my property really galls me. By the time I replaced the quad & put the alarm system in I was nearly £10k out of pocket. Still paying for it on credit card. I only hope that the low lives that stole it get their come uppance.

If for any reason NFU won't insure you (they sometimes have strange reasons why they won't) then Adrian Flux are good at insuring. I went to You horse live and spoke to someone there, without them knowing who I used they suggested Adrain Flux for my Mule. I'm really interested in a tracker though

Just put the word Tracker into Google, the company is based in Uxbridge. My quad dealer recommended it. I have no connection to the company in any way, but I'm a staunch advocate of preventing rural crime. CCTV in towns has pushed crime into the countryside & the police don't seem to care as it's not high volume crime like drugs etc. but millions of pounds worth of equipment is regularly stolen. A few years back a combine was nicked out of the field a couple of mileas away and turned up two weeks later in Poland. I do everything i can to stip crime in my area. Mwe have a farmwatch scheme which is really good. If your local force doesn't have one pester them to set one up. It's made a huge difference near us as we now have a very good rural watch police team. Just putting gates, padlocks & riniging your neighbour if you see something odd does help.

Ours is datatagged, as is my trailer, I thnk that's probably as good a deterrent as any. Problem with trackers is they can be found and removed. We also have it chained to a ground anchor and the barn has a burglar alarm.

We use a Thatcham lock to bolt ours to the floor as these can not be pulled out of the floor without making a hell of a lot of noise. The barn is also padlocked and the gate locked twice. We bought our quad new in 2007 and it is road legal our insurance is through a company called Falcon Insurance and was less than half the price NFU quoted even though we have the yard, wagon and horse trailer insured with them.
