When do you bring them in overnight?

I have always gone by temperature at night, but I know some yards just do it by month regardless. Just curious what everyone else does?

Simple answer - I don't!

However before I rented my own land, it was down to when the YM dictated. They usually came in around the end of September and then went out again 24/7 between April and May.

My arab is still out, and with no rug. She gets horrendous mud fever so as soon as it starts getting wet/muddy in the field she'll be coming in regardless of temp. I feel a little guilty leaving her out without a rug but she's growing a fabulous winter coat already and when I check her in the morning she's toasty

. Temp is about 12C overnight here at the moment, about 14 during the day. I prefer to leave her out as long as possible as she stresses in her stable but am considering rugging her up overnight soon. I'm thinking hopefully she'll last some of October but the way the weather is at moment I'll considering bringing in sooner if necessary

Never! Not very helpful i know!

When Monty was living in at night i started bringing him around October when the grass was completely gone. (not that it helped much since he was too busy box-walking to eat the expensive hay I put in for him!)

I wait until after the fireworks have stopped, as though he doesn't mind them in his field, it takes him a few weeks to settle into a routine of staying in at night, which wouldn't be helped by bangs and flashes!

Out full time now, I am far too idle to have to muck out everyday. It is generally dry here so no mud fever or rain rot to worry about.

Before it was Nov 1st or whenever the YM decdided that the ground was too bad.

Thanks - seems like everyone has a different plan!

This is the first year that my boy isnt in work over winter, so it is a bit more difficult for me to decide what to do with him. Have always been used to clipping, feeding (lots), stabling at night but horse was in work 6 days a week.

He isnt very hairy but has been wearing a LW when it rains and still living out. He is retired due to arthritis and I noticed he was a bit stiff coming in last night for a check over, so wondered if maybe I should bring him in. It is getting below 10c at night (which is when I normally would have brought him in) but I dont want him to stiffen up in the box overnight.

Think I will leave him out as long as possible but he is a funny thing and really loves his stable. Some days he refuses to leave it so he stays in and sleeps all day long. He is such a teenager.

Think I will leave him out longer - he seemed very reluctant to go back out on Weds night which got me thinking (and worrying) about it.

Our two that come in (they are clipped fully in winter) will come in mid to end Oct dependent on the weather. I suppose technically they could stay out 24/7 but then they'd be stuck in their big T/O rugs all the time so, if anything they come in for a rug change - plus mine can suffer with dermatitis on his legs so helps to have a break from the mud.

The older two stay out all winter and will only have rugs on if very very cold or bad weather. Actually don't think my fat pony needs a rug at all, he is just spoiled!

I go with the weather and the amount of grass. You can always put a rug on at night if it is getting colder but i wouldn’t want them out in the pouring rain over night so probably by the end of this month if the weather holds. I would rather bring them in over night a little earlier so they can go out all day for longer.

To be honest, Monty was switched to living out 24/7 for his arthritus. He was far stiffer from a night in the stable than he has ever been living out. I'm sure that is what keeps him going.

ours stay out as long and as much as possible. they'll come in the night before a show, etc., but that's for ease for us

been on yards where they came in when yo said, i.e. November in, with t/o either four hours a day or alternate days in/out, that lasts 'till about March if i remember right.

i like the routine of stabling at night, but sure as heck don't miss the mucking out

.

horses are, on the whole happier out, but they seem to like the odd night in.

Mine live out 24/7 all year round, and only come in to foal, so I only have to think about when to rug, but I go with the weather.....if its cold and wet, then its rugs on... (but it can be a nightmare here, as winter nights can be -5, then go up to 20'c by midday) When I was in the UK, mine did half and half all year round, but seem much happier out all the time now... as long as they have food and their warm...lol

Some answers are a little confusing here. Out 24/7 means they are OUT 24/7

therefore not brought in.

I do understand that OP is asking re those currently out 24/7 though.
