BHS urges equestrians to respond to the Welsh Government’s Draft Road Safety Delivery Plan

The Society welcomes the opportunity to comment on the Welsh Government’s Draft Road Safety Delivery Plan but is flabbergasted that there is no mention of horse riders or carriage drivers being classed as a vulnerable group.

Mark Weston, Director of Access, Safety and Welfare said, ‘It is incredible that equestrians have not been classed as a vulnerable group especially when NHS hospital episode statistics for 2010/11 show that there were nearly 4000 hospital episodes arising from equestrians being injured and needing to go to hospital as a result of an accident on the road with a vehicle. It is imperative that equestrians respond to this consultation as the plan sets out the Government’s approach to road safety until 2020.’

Sheila Hardy, Senior Executive said, I would urge all equestrians to respond, especially to question 6, stating that equestrians should be considered as a vulnerable group.’

I used to live in South Wales. I was always being flashed at by perverts when I used to ride out there on the road - that was my biggest worry about being vulnerable.
