Fibre, protein and energy levels. The higher these are the more nutritious it is. For example, depending on the type of grass used, when it was cut and how it was baled, the fibre, protein and energy levels will vary. Italian ryegrass haylage is very high in energy, whereas timothy hay would be lower in energy. Later cut grass has higher fibre and lower protein than earlier cut grass. Vitamin levels can also vary. not an easy one to answer concisely but hope this helps!
