If your yard offered both Hay or Haylage, both if good quality what would you ask your horse to get.

I can't decide. My horse is 17hh gangly growing 5 year old who is not easy to keep weight on.

I've read pro's for both or them and wonder what's the best to ask them to feed him, currently he getting a mix between the two.

Which is the higher calories..?? He gets as much as he can eat and topped up again at 10pm at night to ensure he has plenty to last the night.

Both or hay.

Both to stop haylage going straight through them and to actually get the feeding value. For putting on weight, keeping on weight or when working.

Hay, if putting on too much weight over winter but to have something through their system. If still working and horse is fizzy.

I'm unsure what you mean..??

Do I top him up at 10pm..??? If so no the yard do but they will give the horse what ever you wish, currently he getting a mix if the two with his top up being hay. So I'd say he was getting more hay than haylage

If the quality was good I would choose hay. My girl does better on hay and as long as I can ad-lib I'm happy.

I believe hay is better for the balance of bacteria in the hind gut.

If your yard offers both and the quality is good why not try one and switch in 2-3 months if you are not happy with the result.

Ah sorry read your first post wrong. Thought you had to choose one or other.

Personally I'd stick with both then.
