ford cargo (iveco)

yes, i've had 3. don't. seriously. go for a DAF or a MAN. wish i had. the latest one, a very well-maintained '04 reg, had total engine failure just after a full service last year and needs a new engine...
the old ones are rustbuckets made of 'unobtainium' - trying to get parts for them gets fairly tricky...

Does anyone have any opinions on ford cargo's?

the old cargo... Parts are hard to find they suffer from rust but if they are good they take some beating..
The newer eurocargo..aka eurotrash in the trade!!!. Rust buckets, brakes can be expensive to repair, electrics not great, mostly good mecanicaly the later tector engine can give trouble but OK if they are in good condition and been serviced well ..

Daf LF has the same engine as the eurocargo tector!!!!

Ok thanks guys, we were told that fords were 'prone to rust' however its just like any other make (i wasnt sure!) and we heard this morning that parts would be difficult to find (G reg).

We're looking at regs between M-Y really within our price range, however many older reg's creep in hence how we saw this one. So really MAN are the best way to go with DAF second (although dont want a ford in the shape of a DAF if theyre still going to play up!)?

the leyland dafs are fine parts easy and not a bad truck, all makes have issues so what ever you do get a mecanic to vet before you buy also make sure the cab tilts and the unladen weight isnt stupid....

Hmmm, I've had 2 Cargo's both of which were fine, reliable and easy to drive. I've also had a Mercedes - excellent, a Daf Leyland (the horsebox from Hell:(:(:(:() which broke down on every motorway in the Midlands:eek::eek: a Man - which is my favourite, reliable and lovely to drive. I now have an Iveco Tector which is OK, but not that easy to drive, the gears are very stiff (although just had a new clutch :eek:which has made it somewhat easier) Good luck with your choice, as advised try and take a mechanic with you.

If you tilt the cab you will see the linkage to the gear lever give all the joints and moving parts a good spray with wd 40, then lower the cab work the gears it should free them, then lift the cab and get some multi purpose grease and a old paint brush and grease up the linkages ...

Wow, good username Perfect:D Sorry, it's all I can do to put diesel in the lorry never mind tilt the cab:D so I can't actually DO what you suggest. However it's very helpful advice as so far I've just been told 'oh that's what Tectors are like' :( I'm going to give a copy of your post to my mechanic next time I use him. Many thanks:)

i have a MAN lovely box. new build 3 yrs ago. i am thinking of selling it if interested. its on a 2001 reg. plated and taxed. i had a cargo which i loved (the hill billy lorry!!) but it was a rust bucket. mercs tend to roll a bit and are generally heavier as a chassis.

Were off to view at least one MAN tomorrow, and possibly an AWD(?) are they any good? (AWD that is, i'm getting the jist that MANs are good wagons to go with if possible)

I veco V ibrate, E verything C omes O ff! :D

I'm on my second - HGV this time, and I truly wish I hadn't gone there again.
Lovely lorry, but I just keep waiting for something to go wrong!

We have had two Ford Cargos, this one we have had for 6 years, never let us down, starts frist time, no touble getting parts, very easy to drive, would have another one any day.

AWD was the the old bedford TL made under licence when
general motors pulled out of building trucks in the uk I think parts may be difficult !!! MAN are good after about 1995 I would avoid the older ones with the little cab
personaly I would say a leyland Daf 45 would be the safest bet if the budget is tight.. mercedes 814 also good and will run forever..

Im on my second although after the first swore never again. It didnt let me down but was awful to drive, dashboard lights had a mind of there own and yes it v i b r a t e d like mad. Looked at loads of others avoiding Iveco, then someone reccomended this to me, I reluctantly went and bought it!! It drives lovely, just like a car but it has a mind blowing 'upside down' gearbox which is taking some getting used too! This one is 10 yrs older than the last one.

I wanted a MAN or DAF, drove loads and they were all different, some nice, some awful. I too was told to avoid Iveco and that MAN was the best. I was also told that if something goes wrong on a MAN, it will cost as parts are much more expensive???

We have a lorry servicing garage about 2 miles from me who run a haulage company on MANs and a couple of DAFs so hoping they might have good access for parts at decent costs.

One of the mechanics will come out and look at any favourites before purchase too.
