Now before anyone 'button pushes' this does NOT constitute advertising I am looking for advice!

We may possibly be off to view a ford iveco 65c 6.5ton box in a couple of weeks time its few years old being a 94 reg but I am assured it has just flown through its plating plus no advisories.

So, does anyone have one of these? what are they like to drive? is there anything with this particular make engine/chassis wise I should be aware of ie common faults/problems.

thankyou

I have one. I had an older model which I sold and bought a newer chassis and had the back put on myself. I love the fact I can travel 2 horses and also have living but is slightly smaller so is more economical. The other good thing in mine is that there is easy access to the engine.

Is this the lorry type or the oversized Transit type, I have an Iveco 49-10 5.2 ton version that looks like an over sized Transit, If so look out for rust around the cab, and water leaks from around windscreen, torsion bar bushes and oil leaks from behind injector pump, otherwise a good sturdy truck, mine does about 28mpg on a run and about 20mpg around town, mine has the 2.8 litre turbo intercooled engine

You can check MoTs online (so can see all the MoTs in last 4-5yrs - or however long it is since they did away with the paper MoTs).

I assume you can check plates in the same way.

Might be worth a look as I know my old lorry flew through the last time I had it tested with no advisories (at which point I sold her), but the year before had loads of them, non of which were addressed as I was really wasn't using her.

I've had a few friends use it since when buying cars and lorries (though were only 3.5t) and found it gave them some useful information.

thanks for the advice guys. As far as I know its had the fanbelt, cambelt and turbo all replaced and has been owned by the same family for 10 years (they had it converted) so Im guessing it cant be all that much of a lemon. 6 months plating left too although if we do go ahead with the sale it will be getting a service once its with us and then its just to get my c1 test sorted!

fingers crossed its the one for us as have been looking for ages now and if its not then I think the plan would be to go for the more ££££ one ive seen (and driven) which was lovely but slightly outside what I really wanted to spend. It will be interesting if anything to see the difference between that one and this one we are planning to go and view which is cheaper.

So glad you have finally found something georgiegirl! Im still looking but ive had to take my 7.5t off the market as im turning people away as not found anything to replace it yet! My other horse went out on loan yesterday so im down to one with a big lorry! The search goes on :(

well not found it yet as we have yet to go view it (and cant go for two weeks due to work so im praying it doesnt go!) fingers crossed its right but from the pictures and speaking to the lady with it it seems to tick all the boxes.....i live in hope!

i upgraded my chassie from 1982 811 ford cargo which i had for 6 years to an iveco 1998 758 i think which i had 3 years the body hasnt changed

its lovely handles well light to drive even tho wooden its a 7.5 ton horses get a gr8 ride.

one tip have someone stand in the horse section when you drive to see how horses will feel it .
I would buy iveco everytime

im told over the cambelt and turbo were done last year - the box has been in storage since its last plating and has just had a run round the block once a week since.

if I do get it it will be going for a full service and thorough check over though!

We have a 7.5t one which is a '93. Mechanically they are fab and very reliable, however you need to be careful regarding the bodywork. It costs us more getting the bodywork through the plating than anything mechanical. Our box is fairly new and goes through fine but the cab is the issue. Ensure when you are on the steps that there is no movement in them as the wheel arch step and front plate detaches from the chassis this cost around £600+ a side to put right. The doors rot and if they are starting to go around the locks this has to be sorted. Pull up the rubber on the floor of the cab if possible and check for any holes in the floor. Be wary of the old trick of hiding gaps and holes with duck tape and then painting over prod joins and ensure it feels as it should.

Im taking my mums partner with me for the viewing who is a vehicle bodywork and welder chap so hopefully we shall be covered from that angle!

I took my Dad who has been in the car bodywork industry so I knew what I was getting and bid accordingly so it is good you have someone to look over it for you as there are some horrors out there! The other non-mechanical things that spring to mind are for the box: water ingress note any staining (and specifically ask about it) as people often mop up before a viewing, rot in the floor (sponginess when walking over it if possible take up any loose rubber matting and get under the box from the outside and have a look, check the springs on the ramp are capable of holding the ramp and you can manage it on your own.

On the drive just be sure of the usual, it starts well, the gears are smooth, the clutch is not operating right at the top, the handbrake holds on an incline, steering is good and does not pull, there is no hissing on full lock. Also check the lights and electrics - there is one gremlin known on these cabs where the indicators randomly flash which is obviously dangerous when on the road. The electrics while not the most expensive problem are a real pain to track down and sort out. Also ask about the batteries/alternator/starter motor - vital parts not to skimp on or you'll be stuck at a show with horses on board.

So long as you spend enough time looking and ask the right questions you should do fine, hope it works out!

YES - envious glares from people still searching for one!!!

There doesn't seem to be any up north

I do, and I LOVE mine. It's big enough to take the two largest of my horses, and small enough that I feel confident driving it anywhere.

It's got large day living which happily accomodates my two great danes, and is zippy enough to get up the most ridiculous of hills.

We used to have a big 4 horse DAF, but it just wasn't practical as was taking up too much space! I should probably buy a bigger lorry again, but I can't sell my ice cream truck. I love her too much!

I have one and it is great. Easy to drive, good turning circle. It carries two horses and has day living but no cooking etc. I have owned it for four or five years, but now I am about to retire, I think that I will have to sell it and go back to a trailer, just to keep the running costs down. However, I will be very sad to part with it.
