To my major embarrassment I have never had to check the water in my truck, normally a friends husband does it for me but for various reasons he has not been around for ages and I am concerned about doing a fairly long journey tomorrow without checking it! My mechanic is on holiday and I can't get hold of the old owners of the lorry. I am assuming it is the thing above where I check the oil and put oil in (checked that and its fine :)) On the basis that there doesn't appear to be a gauge should I just put water in anyway? The cab does tilt but it is a major operation to open up the flaps in the luton so I really can't do that at 4am in the morning! I bought some antifreeze so should I just put in some water anyway?

I realise this sounds really bad and I am hanging my head in shame :D

Suspect what you are looking at is windscreen washer resivoir! If the same as my 51 Iveco the water coolant is on the right hand side when you open the front and there is a clearly marked minimum and maximum levels must be between.

Has yours got a bonnet? I have an iveco but I think its different to yours as the oil and water and windscreen water is under the front bonnet. Think on older lorries it is behind the cab on the passenger door side.

On the old cargos the water header tank is on the drivers side above the oil filler and dipstick. It has two caps , fill to the level of the lower cap. Also take a hammer and give the treads of all your tyres a good thump, If one sounds odd it probably has low pressure, or is flat. Tyre pressures should be checked regularly by a garage ,but checking for a flat tyre is a DAILY CHECK . Check all lights , and check wheel nuts for looseness , radial rust stains from a nut are a sure sign of a loose wheel nut. Tapping nuts with a hammer , they should give a ring ,rather than a dead flat sound. Loose wheel nuts and flat tyres cause more breakdowns than everything else put together. OH yes, and check the brake fluid reservoirs.
