Hi all. My horse has had the operation for kissing spine last August. However tge symptons have not improved. There is also some stable right hind leg lameness. Vets had re xrayed the back, injected the sacrillac and scanned the suspensories all coming back clear. They think it's just pain memory / behaviour. However I'm convinced it's more - she is not a stressy mare but has become more and more tense when riding, when she sees the horsebox her poos get really really runny, girthy and dislikes being groomed. I have no insurance left and the vets seem to dismiss the idea that it could be ulcers or hind gut issues. I am wanting to try a supplement or some form of treatment to see if I get enough response to push for a scope. I know the supplements tend to be more preventative so after doing some research have come across ranitidine. Has anyone used it? If so what dosage and where can I get some without a perscription?
Thanks

My horse is on ranitidine. He was on 12 x 300mg twice daily, but he refuses to eat breakfast so had 12 once daily. After 3 months he has dropped to 8 daily. Soon we will drop to 6 daily, and he'll probably remain on a lower dose for the forseeable future.

The Vet doesn't want to rescope him, as there was a bit of a problem the first time, and he doesn't want to risk doing it again. I'm happy with that decision.

You will need a prescription to buy that strength. Trying to do it with OTC Zantac (75mg) will cost a fortune!

my boy was on 12 x75gm a day of ranitidine (i bought on ebay very cheap) and this dosage was very effective on my boy .all horses are different and some wont need the higher doses

What about the succeed faecal blood test? It can't diagnose ulcers but can tell you if there is a trace of blood in the droppings which will tell you I'd there is an issue in fore or hindgut which then might encourage vets to do further tests or allow you to trial medication

Try Nexium (available on E-bay!) It's had very good result wih my Crazy Pony (suspected of long term ulcer problems.) Whenwe ran out and stopped for a few days, he reverted! Back on it - and we have almost immediate improvement!

3 packs of 14 cost £50 - that's 6 days supply at 7 a day. You SHOULD see some improvement at the end of that if ulcers are the problem (though won't be cured - that will take at least 6 weeks of treatment - and reducing any form of stress as far as possible.) I don't think any of these are as effective if it's hind gut though - but it's worth a try.

Can highly recommend Saracen Rite trac - they may send you a trial pack if you call them. I had a very sick pony who was turned around on it.
