On the subject of foreign horses.

What is the procedure about importing a foreign horse, aren't they meant to have a completed passport before they enter this country now?

Just curious as my vet was saying he's been asked several times, to complete passports for imported horses. The only trouble is, these only have the name of sire and dam printed in them but absolutely nothing else; no sketch, no age, no written description, no microchip number, no freezemark, zilch to match it with the horse. How is he legitimately to say that the bay gelding or whatever before him, actually is a product of those parents at all? FYI, he always refuses to bend/break the rules this way which doesn't always go down well with upset owners but how is he meant to check that horse and passport tally if it isn't completed at source?

I have no idea what you would do in that situation, as I'd never buy a horse without full papers from a credible studbook.

What I can tell you is how to avoid it in the future, rather than being part of the problem.

I bought a KWPN mare earlier this year. She was imported last year ...she came with a passport and the identity was blank.
I contacted the KWPN and they didnt seem worried and said no worries just get your vet to fill it in and we will stamp it.

passports abroad are as much of a farce as they are here.
=
useless
waste of money
misleading

until every foal is microchipped at birth, in this country and others, i will continue to take them with the pinch of salt them deserve.all vet can do is issue a correct drawing, same as a vaccination card!

now PAPERS, they are a whole different matter! providing the animal is dna tested / parentage verified...............and your drawing matches the horse in front of you!!!

How bizarre! They obviously don't care if by any chance the passports had been swapped at all.
You'd think before any passport is issued, everything would have been verified and sketched for the owner; it's almost as if they couldn't care less how their method is open to abuse.

That certainly answers my original post, thank you, I'll tell him - but it still won't get him to complete one without guaranteed and provable proof!

Didn't someone post about this the other day? Imported a KWPN horse & for some reason had it DNA'd. It turned out that the horse was by a completey different stallion to the one recorded on its passport !!

It's quite common for the silhouettes in KWPN passports to be blank, especially foals, although the passports WILL usually have the microchip number and written description alongwith all the usual pedigree info, UELN, etc.

Maybe it's because all horses are microchipped over there so the silhouette isn't so important in identifying the horse...???

Horses from within the EU area should have a passport, if not you have to ask why not, you are then buying the horse and not it's paperwork, if it's nice all well and good but it might not be sound or not at all what it says on the can!!!

I have seen some very strange EU passports at some of the horse sales I have attended, UK dealers are clearly buying up grading failures destined for food to sell in the UK!!!! Mind you like in the UK you do not have to be a breed or type registry to issue a passport and therefore the horses you register do not have to be of known or proven parentage.

All horses from outside the EU should be accompanied with import paperwork which will include a descriptive form and silhouette along with certificates of health from the country of import. This should also refer to the studbook of the horse if it is entered in one. If they do not have this paperwork then you have to ask WHY as this HAS to remain with the horse for the 30 day period that is allowed for the application and issue of an EU passport, this is from the date the horse arrives at an EU port of entry. A horse will not be allowed into the EU without this paperwork (In theory)! Anything imported by air will have to have this paperwork.

Hope that helps.
