I was very sad to read this news on the Racing Post website this morning as Robert Alner is not only a very good national hunt trainer but is also a thoroughly nice man. I have met and interviewed Mr Alner a few times in the past and he is such a gentleman and very straight talking.
My thoughts go with him and his family today and I wish him a speedy recovery.

The following is taken from the Racing Post's online newspaper :

ROBERT ALNER is due to undergo surgery later on Thursday night after being injured in a serious car crash near his base in Dorset.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer was trapped in his red Peugeot 406 after he collided with a telegraph pole in Sturminster Newton near his Droop yard early on Thursday morning.

Firefighters cut him free from the wreckage and he was taken to Yeovil General Hospital before being airlifted to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

A Dorset Police spokesman said an "elderly man" was trapped in the car following the crash and said he was drifting in and out of consciousness with serious head injuries.

Stable jockey Andrew Thornton later confirmed Alner has broken a bone in his neck and is due in surgery on Thursday evening.

"He's broken a bone in his neck and is going for an operation to realign it tonight," said Thornton.
"Sally (Alner's wife) said the nurse was positive on the phone and as far as his head is concerned, it is fine.

"He has partial movement in his arms. The operation is supposed to last three hours, but the nurse was quite positive.

"Sally really appreciates everyone's concern but has asked that people do not ring her at this time."

Alner, 63, has handled a number of top-class horses since taking out a full training licence in 1993.

He trained 25-1 shot Cool Dawn to land the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1998 and also claimed the Grade One Lexus Chase with The Listener at Leopardstown last December.

Alner, who rode 53 winners under Rules as an amateur, also trained Sir Rembrandt to finish second and third in the Gold Cup in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

The trainer is responsible for Kingscliff, who won the Foxhunter Chase at Cheltenham in 2003 before going on to take the Grade 1 Betfair Chase in 2005.

Lets hope that he makes a full and swift recovery....sounds absolutely awful

Yes, hope he makes a speedy recovery, too, and, like you, MFH_09, 63 is NOT elderly these days! I have quite a few years to go before I get there, but I have a friend who's husband is coming up to 60 and he's absolutely GORGEOUS.....even 18 year old daughter reckons "Ted's hot"!

Alner remains in a 'criticial' condition

by Rodney Masters

ROBERT ALNER remained in a “critical” condition in Bristol's Frenchay Hospital on Friday night following the car crash on Thursday in which he suffered a serious neck injury.

Late on Friday, the Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer, who will be 64 later this month, was undergoing surgery to realign a broken bone in his neck. The operation was expected take between three to five hours.

Nick Mitchell, assistant trainer to Alner at the stables near Blandford in Dorset, said on Friday night: “Robert's family was with him before he went into the operating theatre and they said he was in good form, very upbeat. He has one of the very best specialist surgeons. The operation was due to have taken place on Thursday night, but was delayed by a more critical case.”

His wife, Sally, and two daughters,Jennifer and Louise, spent all Friday at the hospital. The accident happened at 5am on Thursday when Alner's Peugeot 406 hit a telegraph pole near Sturminster Newton. He was on the first leg of a trip to France, where he had arranged to inspect a horse.

Regular updates on his condition will be posted by his family on www.newsonrobertalner.blogspot.com, where there is also a facility to leave a message.

I am posting this update to Robert's condition and there is a link ( see above) where people can leave get well messages or find out further updates on his progress.
Let's hope he is soon on the mend
best wishes to him and his family

Alner 'comfortable' after undergoing surgery

ROBERT ALNER is reported to be "comfortable" after undergoing surgery on the injuries he sustained in a car crash.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer broke a bone in his neck after his Peugeot 406 collided with a telegraph pole near Sturminster Newton in Dorset on Thursday morning.

Alner was trapped in the car and had to be cut free by firefighters before he was taken to Yeovil General Hospital.

He was later airlifted to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, where he had a lengthy operation on Friday afternoon.
"He had a comfortable night in intensive care and his operation went well," said jockey Andrew Thornton, who has long been associated with Alner's Droop-based team.

"I think he was heavily sedated following his surgery, but his wife Sally is going to see him later and we will know more then.

"He's been very positive throughout but it is too early to say what the prognosis will be."

I am very glad to hear the operation went well and I hope he is as comfortable as he can be following surgery x

Could not agree more with you there as I felt priviledged to interview him a few times and I was a little in awe to be honest because I had backed so many of his winning horses over the years including, Cool Dawn, Harwell Lad, Super Tactics, Kates Charm and Flyer's Nap amongst them.
He is so accommodating to the press and even though trainers are often so busy on race days he was always polite and found the time to talk with you.
