Had the madest week. Could really have done with some sage advice from you lot but had to deal with the dramas on my own.

Just over 2 weeks ago I decided to sell my horse. 2 days later I had 2 people keen to take him. A bit of wrangling later I got the asking price from the person I thought most suited to my boy .....subject to vettting, which I thought would be a breeze. Deep joy at this point !

On Friday I took my boy down to the vet for vetting, all was going well, eyes, heart, lungs, flexions all good. Buyer decided to have hocks xrayed, just in case and unfortunately they revealed a bone spavin on his left hind. My horse was sound as a pound and I had no idea what a bone spavin was, but it was enough to put the buyer off.....I knew it had all been going too well up until this point.

Anyway, was sad enough to be selling my boy and didn't want the process to drag on so I sold him the next day for a 1/3rd of the original price to a friend who's always admired him. At the end of the day I am pleased he's gone to a home I know and that his future is settled.

So........even though it's too late to influence me, I'd like to know about your experiences with bone spavins and wether or not you'd buy a horse if you knew it had one ???

I put my horse up for sale, a day later she went lame. A week stay in horsey hospital later she came home diagnosed with Bone Spavin in both hocks, she had steroid injections and had been sound in her legs until......

3 months later (a few weeks ago) I decided to put her up for sale again (she's been sound since and I was 100% honest in ad about everything). A week later her back end collapsed and I removed the ad.

She's been resting for the last 3/4 weeks and seems ok at the moment. Not sure what our next step is. Had to consider PTS at one point as she's a nightmare to handle when she's not feeling right and was not sure if she would come right....

Have no idea what our/her future is at the moment. You may have lost some money but atleast she's with someone you trust.

I didn't get any interest in my horse when she was on Horsemart advertised with Bone Spavin.

No I wouldn't buy a horse with bone spavins, I know some people have had horses come back from it, but I wouldn't be prepared to take the risk.

I think you did the right thing.

Jeez, people are so OTT about bone spavins, makes me very annoyed, once the spavin is fused, the horse will be fine, can compete at a high level etc.
Many top performance horses have it!

Yep they will come back to work, but with an altered gait which will affect how much they are capable off. It is not being OTT it is a fact. A horse with a fused spavin will have its range of movement compromised and will not be capable of doing what it was capable of before.

Depend what you want the horse for, if it is just low level stuff, buy it - knowing that you will never be able to sell it unless it is cheap as it won't pass a vet. If you are a bit more ambitious don't buy it as it won't be able to do what you want and it is unfair to expect it to. It's that simple.

Sorry for being so naive, but is a bone spavin similar to a splint?

Or am I being totally dim?!
