A few weeks ago there was an urgent plee for a foster home for a 10 month old husky whos time was running out in the pound, now we are looking to get a new friend for our mal after our other dog went over the rainbow bridge at Christmas but we are not the right home for a husky, anyway I took pity on her and said if needed we would have her until a foster place or home comes up. Now we have found a perfect mal through amruk that my boy gets on great with ( he really doesn't like the husky) but we cant have her because we have the husky, it was only meant to be a temporary foster to save her from the pound but thinking about it now with the sheer number of dogs in rescue I feel we might be stuck with her for a while. Pointless post really just needed to moan a bit as feeling down that I will miss out on a lovely mal.

Can you not contact the rescue who is responsible for the foster dog and ask them to have her back. Not ideal for her I know but I have heard of fosters returning dogs for various reasons. I think if you keep her you will only resent her which won't be good for her in the long run.

Yes. presumably they can try and find another foster for her if your circumstances change (ie if you get another dog)

I think this is maybe something I will have to do but just feel really guilty letting both her and the rescue down. She is the most affectionate loving girl you could meet and really deserves someone who loves her but with the number of them in rescue already looking for homes and they are a "special" breed that is only suited to certain homes so worry where she will end up and she is here now so I am responsible for her.

I don't think you would be letting her down, you have given her a few weeks of home life rather than kenneled and probably set up her up better for rehoming as you now know more about her than if she had just been in kennels too.

Have you tried to rehome her yourself with the rescues backing of course, do you send them regular updates about her.

My last foster dog I knew would be very difficult to rehome, he came in unhouse trained and terrified of everything. I worked really hard and he improved so much but my biggest worry was he would regress when he was rehomed and would bounce. I had lots of enquiries about him through the rescue but talking to the people on the phone it was obvious they wouldnt want him if he regressed. I found him a home with someone who is one of my fb friends, I had been talking to her for a long time about him and she was really keen on him and sent in an adoption form. I got a homecheck done on her and they were really impressed with her and her other animals. Well Billy has now been in his new home 2months and I get almost daily updates with photos, he is thriving and is so happy and so am I. I really thought this dog would be virtually impossible to rehome so it does prove there are homes out there but you do have to be pro-active.

Yes I have been trying to get the word out about her but most of my friends either still live at home and their parents have said no or work full time so are not suitable, the rescue isn't actively trying to rehome her as they want her to have a 4 week assessment period first, I want to give her back but as there are always plees on these rescue sites for adoptors and fosterers I am not sure there is space anywhere for her and also don't want to see her bounce from place to place feeling unloved as she is more loving than any dog I have met and would hate to see that side of her ruined. as I said initially pointless post really just needed a moan, went online to look up huskys wanted to see if there was someone out there that might be right for her but it just brought up so many ads of people selling husky pups, why wont people see the damage that their breeding for a quick buck is doing

Might be worth joining breed clubs on fb as well and posting a link to your rescue site, we had a Dobermann come into rescue and he went into foster care but had to be returned when the fosterers circumstances changed. I put him on loads of Dobe rescue groups and several people expressed interest and one of them was lucky enough to adopt him. They lived the other end of the country too but was an experienced Dobe owner, they were homechecked etc and supplied references and his new owner posts photos and updates.

It can be done but it is really difficult I know that.

I met a pack of 6 huskies when I was out on my run on Saturday (they had 5 on the Friday), they only owned 1 of them, the other 5 were all foster dogs (with the newest edition looking a bit scruffy because he was blowing), think the sled dogs have more in rescue that Staffies do.
I think they are lovely dogs but I know that I couldn't have one as in my opinion they are a lifestyle choice, too many people get them because they are cute little budles of fluff with blue eyes and then they grow up into bored, destructive teenagers because the person that got them didn't fully understand the dogs needs:(
Out of curiousity what do breeders think/do about this, if there are that many in rescue why are so many being bred??

You would be surprised at how many dogs you can fit into your home if you have to! Have a good think about the practicalities of having the Mal as well as the husky foster. Are you totally sure you cannot cope with both? It would only be temporary after all. I have just been through a similar situation (previous foster bounced when I had already taken in another one and I had the first one back of course as well as our three dogs).

Well I posted about the foster on a few husky sites and this seemed to upset the rescue, they have taken issue with her being advertised before her 4 week assessment is up, I honestly dont see the harm in getting her picture out there so any interested people can be home checked ready for when she is assessed. If I knew the rescue wouldn't try to look at options for her before 4 weeks I may not have taken her. They seem to be throwing their toys out of the pram a bit over this and have advertised her as needing an urgent foster home, I have said I would rather she stays with us longer to give her a better chance of getting straight to her forever home as poor girl has been bounced from pillar to post so much already but have said we can only have her another 4 weeks as thats the deadline for the malamute to be in her new home but I dont fancy her chances of being rehomed in 4 weeks if she is not advertised. Is it me thats missing something here or does anyone else think the rescue should be advertising dogs straight away but stating that they wont be released until properly assessed?

I think you should have asked the rescue before advertising her as they take responsibilty and people can get upset if a dog is advertised then turns out not to be availbale/to be different to advertised.
Tbh if you were looking to take on a new dog I would have probably not have got a foster as fosters often stay longer than you think, it's not a quick reassessment!

They are just making me so mad that they would rather bounce her to another foster home than leave her here for another month and spend that time trying to get her her forever home and then do another foster as a last resort if a home cant be found. They knew the foster was only temporary when we took her but due to deadlines in the pound there was not many options. I would think 6 weeks is reasonable to at least look for her forever home but they dont seem interested in that just in complaining that they have been let down and urgently need someone to help them when there is nothing urgent about it. The post I put up about her had their web address on and clearly stated that any rehome would be subject to homecheck and the dog being suited to them so any queries would have been handled by them so I wasn't going behind their back. Just makes me mad that the dog is the one who is going to be unnecessarily shunted around yet again for no logical reason and I have told them I would rather she stay with us longer to try to get straight into her permanent home but this request seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

A month to find a forever home is quite urgent IMO. What happens if they cant find it in your time frame? dog will be shunted again so either way its not ideal!

Agree with SusieT if you were looking to add a new permanent member then fostering was not really the best plan- mate of mine has had her foster dog a year now- no home found.......

I can understand why they would want to re foster asap rather than risk not finding a home in that time. And also why they would prefer to keep control of advertising etc as presumably it is their name/reputation.

I've always advertised my foster dogs straight away, I explain they are being assessed and what I've found so far, this has always had the blessing of the rescue as they are always short of people putting dogs on their site. I've always given weekly assessments to the rescue as well and its put on their site with a photo of the dog. My last foster a Manchester Terrier was not ready for re-homing for a long time as I was sorting out his problems but I continued with his updates and stating he was a work in progress.

I think its very short sighted of your rescue to take this attitude, surely if he is still being assessed they can take enquiries for him and have a waiting list, to me op it sounds like you have stepped on someone's toes and you have upset some jobsworth.
