A few months ago my horse had a kick to the medial side of the radius and had to be box rested for 2 weeks, whilst waiting for X-rays which showed no fracture. He was classed as pasture fit so has been turned out and stabled at night ever since (back to his usual routine). However, since the box rest he has had horrible smelling poo, it smells sour and almost like sick. The appearance is no different however? While he was on box rest I put it down to him having a tummy upset as he can be highly strung and the vet gave us a stomach suppliment, but it has been 2 and abit months now and it hasn't got much better. Some days it isn't as bad but others I can't bare to be in his stable with the smell. The vet has taken bloods twice and nothing is there to suggest anything other than slight anaemia which was cured by a haematinic suppliment off the vet. She has sent off poo samples too which found nothing. He's out all day, has haylage and a small dinner as always. He's always eaten a lot and his appetite is fine, as is his weight (he is a TB). Has anyone experienced anything similar to this? What could be causing it or is there a suppliment I could give? Or should I simply get the vet out again? His worming is all up to date. I should mention he is retired, so does not carry out any strenuous activities etc, he's been retired for about 4 years and I've had him for 7. He is fine and chirpy in his nature and still very cheeky, I am just curious to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar!
