I've been looking round the local dog homes for an another dog to join the family and found a cute, 12 year old, deaf JR who'd been handed in by the owners as 'they could no longer look after her'. She is an absolute delight - I can't believe my luck - she's perfect although rather thin and terrified.

It was so difficult to look at, and reject, the poor dogs in these centres, even the better homes are no place for rejected pets. In the worst centre, as in my previous post, the dogs are so distressed you do wonder if it is kinder to put them to sleep.

One of the saddest sights is the scores of Staffies, (the predominant breed) Staffie crosses, Rotties, Dobies, Alsatians and JRs. I looked up some figures on homeless dogs in the UK. 101,586 strays last year of which 7,743 where euthanised for want of a home mostly.

My plea - think before you breed any more dogs and if you want a dog look in the dogs homes first!

I'm not trying to be preachy to all you excellent dog owners. I feel I can't have seen what I've seen and not say something on behalf of the dogs.

WIth you on this one- Have only ever had other peoples rejects!! Including the two thugs below!

I feel so sorry for the latest IN FASHION breeds like those you mentioned above all of which are breeds that need sensible owners and once fasionable some stupid money grabbing breeders will sell them to anyone!

Poor Old Staffies, they are now the accessory of virtually every street corner drug dealer!! No doubt they also have to fight as well.

One of mine has real issues that I doubt he will ever fully get over, In my will he is to be PTS I do not want him passed from pillar to post, it would be much kinder on him this way.

Well done on giving this oldie a second chance. Can't believe owners who could give up on an older dog like that. Hopefully the poster below wanting to put her JRT x at stud will read this post about all the JRs in rescue and reconsider.

All my dogs are rescue...hence my mam runs a rescue

but I will never purchase a dog...there is more than enough rescue to choose from. Good for you....now where are our piccies

Will put up a piccy if everyone promises not to breed any more Staffies!! (Well, at least till all the ones in the homes are adopted).

LOL....I agree

maybe a more realistic plea....everybody breeding from their animals...take them back when/if the purchaser can not longer keep them...and keep them from filling up the rescue's

Hopefully the pic is below! Only took one as she shakes like a leaf if a camera is pointed at her - no matter how far away she spots it. Makes me wonder what has been done to her.

My next dog will def be a rescue. TBH we were looking for a rescue dog when I got Andy and he chose me. Seeing as how he's currently cuddled up to me I can't imagine having a different dog

I'm on my 4th rescue dog ( got the first one in 1971. )

Please have a look at their websites if they have one as it gives you an idea of what sort of dogs are available . Also , I hate going to rescue centres ( makes me sad ) so at least I go there with the intention of only looking at one dog .

My latest is a Beagle x ? Wish I could put a pic on but I'm not good at uploading pics . He could be part Alsation or GSD as he's quite big . 1 year old next month & already has had 2 homes ( ill treated in both . )

Coming on in leaps & bounds now , but still wary of strangers .

Good on you. It takes a good animal person, i.e. empathy with animals to make a success of a rescue. They are not for everybody because the time and commitment is initially high (though its the same for a puppy of course but with a rescue the issues can be serious and ingrained - but sortable with determination).

Mine new girl is number four. I've also got a gsd cross collie rescue who is a beautiful angel too. I'll try to post a pic of her but have to get my OH to help with the techie bit I'm ashamed to say.

I agree, there are so many dogs in need of loving homes.

I've only had rescues, they can have issues but it's lovely watching their true characters come out as they realise they have a forever home

At the moment I have a Dobie and a Saluki x, both utterly adorable!

Good call, rescue dogs have so much to give. Your JRT will live the rest of his life in comfort and safety. I wish more people would go down this route. Nearly all our pets have been waifs and strays.

Thank you for posting this. I was feeling quite down after the other two posts about breeding.

I have always had rescue dogs and they have all been fantastic characters. But it is only when you experience the "rescue" process first hand that you become aware of the extent of the problem.

It may be my age but I am now less tolerant of people who tell me they are getting a new puppy, costing hundreds of pounds or some rare breed etc. I cannot pretend I am happy for them - they just come across as self indulgent and continue to fuel a dog breeding industry in this country which is focussed 90% on money.

Your little dog looks lovely and I hope she settles in and gains confidence. Do keep us posted........
