I've been looking round the local dog homes for an another dog to join the family and found a cute, 12 year old, deaf JR who'd been handed in by the owners as 'they could no longer look after her'. She is an absolute delight - I can't believe my luck - she's perfect although rather thin and terrified.
It was so difficult to look at, and reject, the poor dogs in these centres, even the better homes are no place for rejected pets. In the worst centre, as in my previous post, the dogs are so distressed you do wonder if it is kinder to put them to sleep.
One of the saddest sights is the scores of Staffies, (the predominant breed) Staffie crosses, Rotties, Dobies, Alsatians and JRs. I looked up some figures on homeless dogs in the UK. 101,586 strays last year of which 7,743 where euthanised for want of a home mostly.
My plea - think before you breed any more dogs and if you want a dog look in the dogs homes first!
I'm not trying to be preachy to all you excellent dog owners. I feel I can't have seen what I've seen and not say something on behalf of the dogs.
