I'm not on facebook but my daughter is. She's just shown me a photo of a girl riding my fllllliiiiiping horse! I'm so mad! I have him stabled in Morocco and only ride him in the summer months when I'm there. The rest of the time he's just lunged and stabled. I can't believe someone rode him, in my flippppin tack and then was stupid enough to put the photo on facebook. OH MY GOSH I"M SO FLIPPPPING MAD!!!!!!

If you can't trust anyone in morocco millreef then why leave your horse there? If you don't trust them then surely this is no surprise?

He's only lunged and stabled? For months on end? I think I'd be tempted to assess the skills of the rider and offer her my horse to ride once in a while if it was stuck in a stable for months I'm afraid. No they shouldn't be riding your horse without permission, but maybe they feel sorry for it and thought it might like a change of scene?

This and this...

I'd be very angry too.
But with living so far away, its hard to be sure how they are looking after him.

Obviously contact them and demand answers.
But maybe if this person is competent, you could get something positive from it and arrange something more regular.
It could help you out.

I rescued him from a very bad situation. I am the only one who rides him when I am there but I cannot trust anyone to be sympathetic enough with him when I'm not there. He isn't just stabled and lunged. He's turned out and handwalked too. Please don't judge me. I love my horse and don't want anything wicked to happen to him as happens to all the other horses I see in Morocco. He's my special horse.

Impossible - I've had him for seven years now and I know all the yards around the area. They're really crazy in Morocco - they have no sympathy or common sense when it comes to horses. I have moved him a couple of times but I thought this place would be good. My husband is trying to sort out the situation now. He's going over in March to sort it for me. It's the hardest thing to be so far from my horse. If I could have him sent over to Hong Kong I would, but it's not possible.

Please don't be one of those people who think only they are the best person for their horse.
Yes we all love our horses and want them treated right so are warey of others doing things.

You obviously trust this person enough to look after your horse term, so why couldn't you find someone nice enough to ride your horse and keep him occupied while you are away?

You obviously need to have stern words with the person looking after your horse.
Was it them riding or a random.person you don't know?

You may not be able to ever trust this person now.
So you may need to change the situation and care arrangements for your horse any way.

Did he look happy?....as far as you can tell?

I'm with springfeather on this one.
I know some people think that they and only they can ride their horse but it is seldom the case.

Your husband is going all the way to Morocco from Hong Kong to sort this out? Surely you just phone them up and say "don't ride my horse". Can't see there's much else to sort out tbh if you can't move him to another yard then stuck at this one.

It was a random person YES.
I feel like I'm being attacked by some of the posters on here!
I love my horse and for the past seven years I have spent three months a year riding and schooling him. For the time I am not riding him he is well looked after but NOT ridden.
PLEASE just ignore this post if you're going to be mean. I am very distressed about this and wanted to come onto the HH to share my anger and to hopefully feel better and not to be attacked.

Poor sod.

He's probably pleased to be getting out a bit.
I'm sorry it's upset you but it upsets ME to hear of horses kept on standby in stables until their owners turn up. Sorry.

Why can't you get him to Hong Kong?

It's not about the level of the rider - My horse was ridden without my permission by a complete stranger! Am I on an alternative universe here?
My horse is well looked after but NOT ridden. I pay good money for the care and for him NOT to be ridden.

Have you considered getting in touch with in the saddle or unicorn trails or the like and asking about the Moroccan yards they use? After all their reputation depends on the horses of the organisations they link up with being well cared for and many of the holiday goers are experienced enough to pick up on welfare concerns.

When I lived in Morocco for a bit I rode at a yard that was linked to one of them and while the horses were not kept exactly how I'd choose (individual turnout and not enough of it IMO) the guys running it adored them, had real horse sense and met their welfare needs. As I helped for free rides I don't think they were putting on an act for me.

Have you called them or emailed and asked why?
They may be genuinely sorry, it could have been a one or for a friend and with your telling off they may never do it again.

But you have to trust them to look.after you horse for 9 months of the year.
Can you really trust that they do as they are ment to?

Personally, I don't consider just being lunged and stabled as good horse care.
Yes, he shouldn't be ridden without your permission but I'd be far more concerned about the fact he has no free time.

I really don't think any one has attacked you. I my self was just wondering how you trust them to take car of your horses as you mentioned some of the states horses in Morocco end up in, which suggested to me that was meant in terms of car, not just riding.

If that was the case, just by lunging and ground work they could equally mess up your months of schooling and riding, thats all.

No one should ever be allowed to ride someone else's horse without the owners permission.
I would be extremely angry to find this out too.

Whilst I agree with op that someone riding her horse without her consent is something to be mad about. I agree with SF completely

i guess some of us find it hard to understand the situation you are in with your horse which is why it might come across as unsympathetic. it may be 'normal' for you to leave your horse for 9 months in the care of someone else but it would be totally alien to most of us. While i can understand why you are angry, it is an unusual situation and i'm sure it's not the first time it has happened, just the first time they have been caught! you may not like it but because you live so far away for so long i think either you accept it's going to happen or move heaven and earth to get your horse to you in hong kong. sorry , probably not the answer you are looking for.

Maybe that's what is upsetting too. The fact that I trusted this person to look after my horse. I feel so betrayed.

Thanks smellsofhorse for the advice too.

One thing I would suggest is that you do NOT say that you saw a picture on facebook or it will stop anyone posting others if it were to continue after you or your husband speak to them. I would be trying to find another person to check up on him at random intervals and see if you can find a suitable person to perhaps ride occasionally. I certainly would not move the tack away simply because if anyone is going to continue to ride him when you have said no its likely they would do so using other tack that would not fit properly if yours was not there. hope you can get it sorted
