I know dogs can catch it but how contagious is it. We have a fox with very bad mange visiting the garden and wondered if I need to take any extra precautions.
Be sure to keep your dog on a suitable medication ,eg revolution ,stronghold ,advocate ...that will kill the mite if the dog is infected..dogs with low immune systems will be most at risk( old, young ,unwell)
a healthy dog should be at less risk if he's not in close contact with the fox...but I'd still have medication cover.
Years ago both my Lancashire Heelers got this and I can Only presume they had gone through a hedge that a fox with mange has passed through. I caught it early and my vet gave them both an injection and they were fine.
Foxes tend to travel repeat pathways,so I'd also look at entry points in your garden and block them..even use barbed wire if it's coming through a hole in the hedge..etc...
we've recently been dealing with harvest mites which is a lot less aggressive, but In the end even that took a few weeks to really get on top of. I had mine on frontline plus, but I had to change to bravecto to get rid of the mites.
