Really sorry ive put this in here but you all know Hattie and that she's been lame so i thought it best to put it in here! ill keep it brief!

Took Hatts to vet today, they x-rayed hocks and stifle, all x-rays were clean apart from side view of stifle which showed that she seems to have fractured her fibula. Vet has never seen this happen before and has gone to consult some other vets. But i was wondering if any of you had ever had any experience of a fractured fibula in a horse??

Thankyou guys!

no, never, but i know that bone actually heals much much better than either tendons or ligaments, which is good news i hope. it needs to be given time, but my understanding (not a vet, based on personal experience etc) is that it remodels and strengthens and ends up as good as new, unlike tendons etc.
Bruce Davidson took a mare round Badminton years ago who'd suffered a spiral fracture of her entire front leg iirc, it had healed completely and stood up to top-level eventing.
really hope this has a happy outcome for you. poor Hattie, poor you.

Oh no, poor Hattie

From my experience with bones, provided the fracture is relatively simple, they heal well and relatively quickly.
Fingers crossed you are both back out second half of this season.

You should speak to AandK on here, her horse fractured a leg (can't remember exactly where) in the November and still made the March events!

Well thats very encouraging

We're hoping if it is this, then several weeks box rest and then walking out should mend the fracture and strengthen the leg before we get her brain back in gear and out eventing again

touch wood!

Oh what a bummer

What a rubbish time for her to do that to herself!

Any idea how she did it?

At least you know what your dealing with now though and can get on and progress meding it.

Healing vibes on their way! >>>>>>>>

Poor Hattie.

We had a horse that got kicked and factured its back leg, it took a few months to realise this had actually happened as she never went lame. Anyway she had some box rest and came back completley sound. She wasn't off long.

Havent got a clue how she did it!! its a bone the size of a splint bone and its at the back of the upper leg so have no idea how she managed to do it!! typical my horses always do wierd things to themselves!! never simple!

Sorry - no experience in horses - but broke mine in two places last summer! It will heal pretty quickly I am sure. Fibula fractures in humans are pretty straightforward - it's only when there are actual breaks or secondary breaks elsewhere it gets complicated. Hope she recovers very soon. X

Oh no!! Poor Hattie! I am sorry to hear that. Fingers crossed that the healing process is quick and simple..

Have you got anything else to ride/event? PM me if you want the loan of a Novice eventer!

Oh no what a terrible time for an injury. But bones heal well - know a couple of horse who have had small fractures and have returned to eventing.

If you want some riding at the weekend let me know as we generally take one out hacking on a lead rein.
