Hi, just wondered if anyone has any experience of a horse with a fractured jaw. My horse is returning to me tomorrow having spent just over a week at Liphook where she had screws and wire fitted to secure her jaw. When I went to visit her yesterday she was finding it extremely hard to eat hay, so wondered what would be the best. The vet spoke to me today and said moli chaff or easi grass I think it was, but she said it was up to me. Just wondered if anyone has any advice on whats best to replace hay for a very good doer who will be spending 20 hours a day stabled throughout the summer?

Poor irlie. lets hope everything heals well and quickly.
you could try hi fibre cubes soaked in water to a paste. also Rowan Barbary feeds do hi fibre mashes which can be soaked.

Oh poor her and poor you. I think the vets advice is sound, also buy a feed that goes to mush when soaked.

I am sure you will get loads of more experienced advice.

Good luck

What about grass pellets? I believe they are soaked so might be easier to eat; or sugarbeet?

Readigrass is quite good, but sharp I thought, although my ned liked it.

Hope your ned is okay hun.

If shes strugglng to eat feed her sinple systems blue bag grass pellets. When soaked for 2 hours or more they form a mush... easy and palatable.

along the soup/porridge lines - either calm & condition soaked for 15mins (mega-yummy, according to Barry) or fast fibre - that only needs about 2mins (ideal for the disorganised amongst us

) - not quite as yummy though. If she's a good doer maybe that would be better than c&c - it goes a long way too.

A friend of mine had a horse with a broken jaw - the mare is now 20 and as good as ever. Hope yours recovers as well.

poor horsey. my sis s horse got a broken jaw a few years ago. it didnt take too long to heal at all and he was back eventing at the end of the season. i think he was back to his normal eating habits pretty quickly. i only remember that she had to put lots of wax over the wire to make it more comfortable. hoping it heals as well and quickly as her horses did.
