My gelding fractured his tibial crest a year ago by getting kicked by another horse. He Had to have 3 months on box rest and walked twice a day for 15 mins. When he was brought back into work it was very slow progress to build him back up. He's been in normal work for almost a year now which he copes fine with. The bone had healed up which the vet said wasn't a problem but they said I should have increased the walking Inhand more. Which annoyed me beause they told me just do 15 mins twice a day. Anyway I was just wondering if anyone else has had any experience good/bad and I would like to know your stories.

Afraid I haven't got as far as you yet! :) 7 months ago my horse fractured her sesamoid due to a road accident, she was only 4 at the time. Vets said 4-6months box rest and she ended up doing 6 months. I had to do 20 minutes of inhand walking twice a day (or ridden but this was unsuitable due to my horses highly spirited nature and all her energy from box rest!) she has been going out in a smallish field alone for about 1 hour a day (she could go out all day but yard doesn't have enough fields and she can't go out in her original field yet.) She is back in light work, doing about 30 mins of schooling and in about 2 weeks I will get the vet back up and if she is ok she should be able to go back out in her field (with about 7 other mares) can't wait, she isn't very happy at the moment and box rest has been very hard for her but she has behaved impeccably.

My boy was 4 when it happened to him. I was gutted, I had to have my other boy pts due to a ligament injury so I thought right I'm going to buy a youngster start a fresh. He had only been broken in 12 months when it happened. Luckily for me he is so laid back the whole walking Inhand he was fine. If anything I think he was getting fed up of it. But after three months off I was dreading getting back on incase he decided to blow up. Sounds like yours is doing good though! :-)

My boy was kicked in the field about 3 years ago, and sustained a radial stress fracture to his right fore. He was on box rest, cross tied, for 12 weeks, followed by a month of regular box rest.

He coped fine (which surprised me hugely) and he was excellent when I was allowed to hand walk him too. I only had a short spell of hand walking before he was able to be turned out (forget exactly how long).

I was given the all clear to commence under saddle exercise to get him fit, and just took it easy for the first few weeks. It was only due to fitness, as the vet pointed out that once the bone had healed (which it had), it was as at least as strong as before his injury.

So is your horse simply taking longer than expected to get fit? I suppose they're all different, like people, as my boy coped fine and built up his fitness with no problem.

Except 3 years on he's back on box rest having torn his DDFT, so there you go!

Great that your boy is doing well, it gives me hope ! Yes I know how you feel, I had only hacked my horse out twice when the accident had happened which was due to an idiot rode driver. It's very frustrating! I will be moving yards as soon as possible due to the hacking/turnout situation which will be best for my horse. The worst part for me was definitely bringing her back into work!

Mine got kicked and fractured his upper radius twice and has now been back in work a year and a half, he also managed to do a suspensory and a tendon on total of almost 2yrs on/off box rest. Fracture all healed and fine and back doing what we love :D Prelim @ DR SJ/XC 70cm (as I am a wuss).

Treatment was box rest, I couldn't cross tie him as in the words of my vet he'd hang himself (refuses to stand still), so a multitude of calmers/toys, patience, ultra sound and comfrey :)
