I have a 6 yr old Kentucky mountain horse who sustained a hip fracture 2 weeks ago. Vet came out , examined her and basically told me what it was. However he told me he thought it was on crest of the ilium. Edema has been tremendous in affected extremity but is gradually going down. Horse can not trailer due to pain. Vet told me she could possibly do rectal but may not be able to find exact locale of fracture . Anyone had a horse go through this? I know I can't look for prognosis yet. I'm keeping her on box rest hoping for no colic. Thanks for any info or support in advance.

My now 18(ish) year old cob was rescued having been dumped in a ditch at about 9 months with a fractured pelvis. He needed help to stand initially - although malnorishment was part of that. I wasn't the initial rescuer so I wasn't involved in his day to day care at that point. I just have the photos of the sorry little scrap of piebald fuzz in a sling and then re-learning to trust etc.

But the long term prognosis is good so posting in the hope that it can offer some re-assurance. He has a slightly unlevel pelvis which means his saddles must be bespoke. But other than that it has never affected his way of going or what he can achieve. He's never going to be a grand prix dressage horse - he's a 13.2 piebald cob! But he does fine in PC Competitions, eventing up to nationals and local showing. He absolutely loves his hunting and can go all day. So hopefully light at the end of the tunnel for you OP - hoping you can get there!

I had a big Shire cross mare here on box rest with a suspected fractured wing of ilium. She wasn't mine, but belonged to a neighbour who was abroad on holiday at the time of the injury, which was sustained in the field.

Vet diagnosed the injury via rectal exam. We walked her here down the road, about 200 yards, as it was thought to be the lesser of the evils than boxing her over. The vet walked with us in case of catastrophy. She stayed here for 10 - 12 ish weeks in cross ties, as the vet said that she MUST NOT lie down, as the fracture was unstable so could go at any time. She wasn't ever x rayed, she was treated on symptoms alone.

She came good in the end, but she did get lami in a hind foot due to the prolonged preiod of immobility, but the lami was controllable.

Good luck.

A lot depends on what part of the pelvis is involved mostly they recover ok but some parts may never stabilse. Time is always the best healer and the only option with a pelvic fracture.
