My horse has got a fractured tooth , had X-rays done and vets advised can leave for now , not covered on insurance for mouth due to lip ulcer , vets tried to get it lifted but not covered still , do all fractured teeth need to come out ? Cost ? Txt currently not causing any issues

One of mine has just had a fractured tooth removed. Not had the bill through yet but he spent 4 days in the clinic having the tooth out (back tooth so firmly wedged in there and extracted over two days) and then the gum debrided as food had packed and started to rot right the way up into the root.

This happened in a matter of weeks - the cracked tooth was deemed okay approx 8-10 weeks ago (3 monthly checks due to fracture and diastemas) and the vet had been happy to leave it for the last 3.5/4 years.

So yes, it might eventually need to come out.

I had a fractured molar extracted from my then 10 or 11 yr old a few years ago by the vet at home. Took a good couple of hours, a lot of sedation and was rather gorey. Can’t remember the exact final bill but I think somewhere around £400 ish.

One of mine just started to 'not eat'. We discovered a fractured tooth. She went to the clinic for x ray and possible extraction but under sedation it proved possible to just remove the fairly large chunk that was cracked off from the main tooth. Horse was immediately more comfortable and eating. Nearly 3 months now and we have a dentist check up in two weeks time.

Tatts had a broken tooth it was found at a roultine dental he had no pain so we left it be , eighteen months later it was painful at a roultine dental with him the objecting to rasping even when sedated so it had to come out

Oldie was found to have a broken back tooth just after I bought him. It was taken out under local but took the dentist some hours. Remember it costing about £1200 and that was 10 years ago. The insurance didn't want to pay out as they said he could have had it when I bought him but after the vet contacted them, they paid half. The vet wasn't able to get it all out but it hasn't caused him any problems. He has to have the dentist out every 6 months to rasp the opposite one down.

Youngster was (we think) booted in the mouth by oldie. One of his front teeth was fractured horizontally. The dentist pulled the lower half off and after X-rays at the vets we left it alone. However, a few months later he started getting spots filled with puss on his gum and the tooth was found to be infected so it had to come out. Again taken out under local. Much quicker and cheaper this time (possibly as he was not insured anymore for his mouth). Less than £500 I think, but will have to ask daughter as she paid out.
