I am also a member of an American horse forum. Because they are always going on about Quarter Horses, I decided to do a little research about them. I came across this video on Youtube. This is probably one of the ugliest horses that I have ever seen. A body like a Belgian Blue bull. tiny feet and post like legs. It looks like it was bred for the plate not for riding.

No doubt a lot of work has gone into breeding a horse like that. The same sort of work that went into breeding bull dogs that cannot breath and german shepherds that cannot stand up.

Disgraceful and an insult to the horseworld.

OMG when I saw the title I thoughtbitbwas some sort of German horse I had not heard of.
It looks like it been photoshopped but not in a good way.

From what I understand, it is the result of a genetic defect. Some years ago, a horse called Impressive introduced a gene which resulted in hyperkalimic periodic paralysis

Despite the chance of having their horse drop down dead under them, they were impressed with the Arnold Schwartzinegger look, and continued to breed from the Impressive line.
Here is a short video of Impressive

Yuk! I agree with all of the above...getting to look more bovine than equine :( On a lighter note, when I watched the clips of it moving(well,i say moving, but it's more lumbering along!) one if the first things that popped into my head was the Kenny Everett sketch, where he was Rod Stewart in leopard skin leggings and his bum gradually got bigger and bigger til he could hardly move! Sorry, just me and my weirdly connected mind... ;)

Oh I love Kenny Everett, so just for you VVV

Ah,Froglet, thank you so much!! That took me right back and made me properly laugh out loud:) At 50secs in, he adopts the same kind of movement as the QH stallion-must be the backside-hindrance effect! Brilliant;) xx

You're welcome VVV, Kenny always made me laugh too, and I know a lot about the backside-hinderence effect too unfortunetly.:o

I prepare to be lobbed with tomatoes....
I agree it has excessive muscle, even for a stallion.
However western horses shuffle. Walking my aunts western ridden (world championship competition) appy tonight and I swear it would trip over his own feet. He doesn't even pick up his feet off the ground! I'm too used to my strident warmblood

Sorry to sound like a fluffy bunny cuddler but this is a living creature with a heart and a soul and a capacity for love and emotion and loyalty for the humans that care for it....could we possibly not be rude and unkind about it, I just think as humans we could be generous enough to grant that dignity

This particular horse's muscle tone isn't cause by HYPP, as he is N/N, so negative. While he is genetically bred to look like this, it has also been contributed to by massive amounts of feed. The weight the youngsters have one them is not something that anyone with ridden horses would want!

I really don't like the halter horses, I think they look like beef cows. Unfortunately, this sort of thing is incredibly desirable for a halter horse, even though a working life is pretty minimal due to the conformation (ie post legs) and excessive weight placed on them from a young age.

I must admit there are some incredibly lovely working line QH's, especially some of the ones that compete in reining and cutting, very athletic and smart horses.

Hes a poor example of what a good 'working' quater horse should be, its a shame because they are usually lovely horses with great temprements.
Kx
