FRC

I always have a little chuckle to myself about that frog trimming - but then im in the barefoot militia now ;)

I suppose the matter boils down to if the farrier is re-trained can they be trusted not to do it again??

i don't understand the question as the link just goes to home page?

the chap who was charged with criminal damage?/causing unnecessary suffering? but hacking at his ex girlfriend's? horses feet only had a short suspension.

The disciplinary system within farriery has and is an embarrassment to most of us.
There have been cases from ½ a tongue being pulled out by a twitch to the most reason case that has been mentioned.
In-between there are endless cases where farriers have got away with either, a light or no sentence
The only reason I still retain my membership to the FRC is so I can carry on having barefoot referrals from vets and help farriers when called upon to do so.
It is a closed shop (the act made sure of that) and it is still run by the wrong people who do NOT have the horses welfare as their main concern, (the ‘U’ bend in your Loo has more legal protection than your horses foot)
We are a long way off seeing farriers having to justify their professional conduct as much as vets have to, but when that day arrives you can watch the FRC run for the hills when they are asked to support the accused.
Then and only then will we get farriers having to take out professional negligence insurance due to them having to be responsible for their actions.
This will lead to bringing in a minimum standard for farriery based on scientific grounds and baked up by ongoing research that would be made available to the profession (not craft!!)

Sorry to sit on the fence with this one… just can’t make my mind-up as to how I feel about the whole discipline thing!!

The FRC is an old boys club and they protect their own, that's why it's so ironic that they dismiss barefoot trimming bodies as self-regulating when that's all they are. Most complaints against farriers are thrown out as having not enough evidence, particularly in the cases of hitting horses with tools etc.
The case a couple of years ago is a good example, where a farrier 'took revenge' on a horse owner by butchering her horse's feet and got a 3 month suspension.
Laughable.

I once read a thread on a mainly american forum where the FRC was being held up as a shining jewel by the main UK poster. They weren't happy when I stated that it isn't perfect and rather wimpishly I backed out when the UK poster became quite nasty. Anyhoo, it's nice that I'm not alone in thinking that the FRC has some rather big issues/problems.

to the most reason case that has been mentioned.

sorry to be dim but what is the most recent case everyone is apparently talking about?

the link just takes me to the FRC home page. Is that the frog in question. I wouldn't tolerate that on my horses but for most farriers I think it is pretty normal. I presume from the FRC's POV that is what they think a well shod foot looks like?

That case was so bad I seriously question the man's sanity! Wanton cruelty at the very least. For me, that should have been a "struck off" situation, but he got less than some very minor misdemeanours have been given. It did make the whole FRC look ridiculous. The horse owner isn't protected by this, just the livelihood of farriers, however poor their workmanship is.
