I was rising along with my OH, when a long, not so thin, branch poking out on the trail caught inside his stirrup - not sure how he managed that. I saw him riding forward trying to shake it off, while it kinda flapped around his horses bum. I rode forward in fascinated horror just as the branch snapped and whip-lashed at speed straight into my head. Good thing it caught me on my hat - it was quite a blow, luckily my girl just did a little leap, and I just have a bit of a headache to show for it. So I was just wondering what other weird little unforeseen (not too gruesome) accidents others have had - as I have learnt from this one not to be too nosey about what's happening in front!

Tearing along out hunting up a hill, to see a large clod of earth detach itself from the horse's hoof in front... and wallop me straight in the eye. I could not see as my eyes were watering so badly and had a couple of unpleasant minutes, including an unexpected jump as I couldn't pull up immediately. I had a proper old fashioned black eye the next day and not one person believed me when I told them how I got it!

Owww, hope your headache doesn't last too long.

I was hacking along a bridleway and saw a fallen tree about 2ft off the ground, I did a ground check and them turned back so I could have a little run up to jump it. Jumped it fine and let the horse canter on a few strides, started to pull up and realised there was another fallen branch but rider chest height coming towards me. I tired to pull up quicker but failed and sat there like a lemon rather than ducking  I was pushed off the back of the horse by the branch landed on my bottom but some how kept hold of the horse who pulled me up onto my feet as she stopped.
I got back on and rode home, feeling my ribs swelling as I went. Luckily I was only badly bruised.

Ouch, so lucky it didn't get you in the face!

I was on a horse out in fields one day when it spooked and tanked off, straight in to an electric fence... Yes it was on. Yes it hurt! We got wrapped up in it for what seemed like ages but in reality was probably only a few seconds before the horse freaked out enough he managed, somehow, to get us free. He was worse off than I was as it was only against my lower leg.

And I stayed on :p

He was totally shell shocked afterwards, luckily neither of us were hurt, then I had to casually explain to the farmer why his fence was down haha :D

Out hacking with a friend, a whippet and a springer. We were riding along a narrow bridleway with friend in front, dogs running around and me behind. Within a split second the whippet grabbed a mixy rabbit, a bramble caught on my friends fleece and the world slowed down. The bramble stayed on my friends fleece as she rode forward, my daft springer ran under her horse which jumped forward and the bramble reached the end of its tolerance and pulled off her fleece, whipped back straight across my face - lucklily missing my right eye. But for weeks I had a deep cut from the outside corner of my right eye, across my right cheek and down towards my left ear lobe.

Poor rabbit didn't survive

Out hunting years ago - got off to do a gate, rest of field went through and my mate barely waited for me to get back on. She cantered off whilst I was sorting myself out, and my mare went bombing after her, took a short cut under a low tree and whipped me straight off over the back. Result? One missed skiing holiday due to knackered back muscles and a good concussion!

Aouch everyone! I'm REALLY lucky it didn't get me in the eye, or i would be in hospital now, it was a proper branch not a twig. I'm thinking maybe we should take a first aid kit with us on longer rides. Not that it would help with most of the incidents here.

I was riding as rear escort on a hack from the riding school. We were having a trot round the field, and I felt something on my face, brushed my hand across it - OW OW OW OW OW - it was a bee, it then stung me. I then heard a buzzing sound, glanced back to see a swarm following us! Yelled at lead horse to " Run-bees" and we all took off at a gallop, luckily we had a bunch of kids who were quite competent and all managed to say on.

I looked like I had done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson, the bee just missed my eye and stung me just below my bottom lashes - my eye blew up like a balloon and then a couple of days later turned a lovely black colour!!

A couple of years ago going through a gate into a forest inclosure my stirrup caught on the gate catch. Pony kept walking - luckily didn't panic - as at first I didn't realise what was happening and I ended up being dragged off.

I obviously don't learn as it happened again recently. I didn't get dragged off but my leg and foot got squished against the post.

The gate openers and catches got changed some years ago to make them easier for the disabled. Great for them but not so good for me. My fault for not paying attention!

Not really a small accident, but definitely a freak one.

When I was a teen was hacking my pony through some woods at the side of a pond (one of those boggy ones covered in pond weed). Something spooked the pony and he leapt sideways straight into the pond, started to sink and instead of turning struck out for the other side. I managed to get off amongst all the flundering, we were out of our depth, hang on to his head and turn him to head back to where we had gone in.

But, it was a bog/pond, deep and he couldn't get out, the water/mud was up to his shoulders. Eventually he stopped struggling, went down and just lay there trying to hold his head up. I rolled him onto his belly (how I don't know, I suppose the water/mud gave some help) and that was it, he was stuck and was in danger of drowning.

Had to leave him, run to the road, flagged down a car (must have looked like a swamp monster), actually stopped all the traffic by standing in the middle of road and waving my arms. And then ran back after telling the bemused motorists to get help, fire brigade, vets, army whatever.

Got back in the pond and held his head up until help arrived.

The fire brigade got him out, I had to virtually go under water to get one their hoses underneath his belly, and then they just winched.

Except for a deep cut on the top of his leg which needed stitches, he was fine.
We got an award from the RSPCA though, the firemen and myself.:)

I bruise really easily so it took a few weeks for the bruising to go but I had sore ribs for about 6 weeks. I started riding again (just short hacks) after 2 weeks but my cob is very safe and stands perfectly to get on from a high mounting block.

Just into my teens and riding my pony on some land in front of a small group of terraced houses. Want cantering across land but didn't see the washing line stretched across it which just happened to be neck height. Cantered straight into it. Managed to stay on the cantering pony but had a lovely mark right around my neck, washing line burns. Looked as though someone had tried to strangle me with cord. Broke the washing line!

Some years ago I was enjoying a nice canter along the canal when a dragonfly hit me in the face just under my eye! By the time I got back to the yard I had a big old lump on my face (like a massive spot only hard)that helpfully obscured my vision so I had to hold my head funny to see. None of my non horsey friends believed me, all the horsey ones laughed.A lot.

Dont read if you get upset easy) Not a ridden accident but a very freak one

Last week my friends horse was out in the field and there is a little bit if metal sticking out off the gate 4 inch ( for some reason everywhere where I live leaves them left on as this gate was new with its stump's..) The horse spun around and gashed her side wide open and broke all her ribs and her gutted's where coming out I have never seen anything like it in my life horrific the vet was there in 11 mins but sadly she was dying.. It was like a horror film just a freak thing that happen..

R.I.P Nell she was only 4yo

My friend was catching in during the winter, the horses were playing and bucking, one horse flicked his back legs in her direction, a piece of ice flew out of his hoof and smacked her in the face, breaking her nose! She had to have an op to fix it.

Another friend turned out her own horse, he bucked at her and split her spleen!

See my Have had a massive accident thread to see a very gruesome pic of what happened to me two weeks ago.
