As part of a laminitis awareness campaign you might be interested to know, I have just come across this link.

If your horse needs to be tested for Cushings, your vet can download a voucher and your test will be free of charge.

There is to be an online programme on April 10th at 8pm GMT. Click on the link above to register.

Would you test even if your horse didn't show classic symptoms? Specifically thinking of a 16 yo mare, very good doer, cresty neck even with exercise and gets footy on too much grass.

I think I would have the test done as peace of mind.

The reason I say this is my pony had laminitis for the first time when she was 16 (unexplained cause).

She then when on to have laminitis if turned out on frosted grass; developed COPD and also recovered from injuries slower.

Had the actual test and diagnosis last year and lots of her previous symptoms have gone.

If I had had the test done when she was 16 then her lungs were not have the damage they have now.

I contacted my vet about testing for cushings three weeks ago. Does the voucher cover analysis of the results, or simply the blood test itself? I'd be really keen to get my mare tested; don't know what i'd do if the test comes back positive as the drugs are v expensive and my OH will have a fit, but if it means my mare will be happier then so be it.

The voucher covers the actual test itself, you will still have to pay the vet callout fee and charge for taking the blood. Its only the laboratory fees for the ACTH blood test to detect Cushing’s that is free.

I used this on Monday paid for vet call out and blood taking , voucher covered analysis of blood , came back borderline he is 24 but now left me with a million things to think about , bloody typical would have been easier if it was positive or negative not halfway between.
Well worth taking advantage of this free test , mine had no clinical signs just slightly hairier than normal at least it has given me a heads up and can have control if it before it becomes a problem.

I did this last year. Results came back at 22, so borderline. No symptoms but ever longer coat as in 'Yak like' this winter and 22 years old. Might go for it again, if allowed. Will look into it.
