I'm just sat at work flicking through local paper and saw horse advertised for free loan. (not that i'm looking at getting a horse yet) but it just got me wondering. What does this mean? I'm being extremely slow today! Haha

I presume it means the horse is available for loan as opposed to lease in which case you would have to pay for the priviledge of having said horse!

Free Loan- you get horse for nothing for period of time and you agree to undertake everything that the owner asks of you to care for their horse whilst in your care livery costs/feed/groom/vet/farrier /transport/exercise/ insurance and so on.

So do you agree to livery costs etc after the period of having horse for nothing? I need educating!

Not sure what you mean . Basically you take the horse to your house/local livery yard and look after it as if it were your own, sometimes owners demand that you must keep the horse at a certain yard, usually where they can keep an eye on it. You pay for everything, like cindydog said, all feed/vets/ins/shoes/livery, but at the end of the agreed period (be it a month/year/more) the owner of the horse will probably take it back. You will have paid nothing for the actual horse (other than it's keep) nor get anything back for it. Sometimes after the period is up, the owner may renew the contract with you so you keep the horse for longer (again for free but paying for it's keep) or they may even offer the horse to you to buy, then you could pay for the horse and it becomes yours.
A lot of people offer their horses for free loan if they want to keep them but maybe can't afford the money or time for them at that moment in time, maybe they are going to university or have had a baby or are having money problems.
Hope that helps.
:)

Ditto above.

Some loan horses, more so say competition horses etc, have a set sum per month you pay on top for having the horse too [usually called 'lease'].
So you'd be paying for all livery and care costs like normal, PLUS a set fee per month for having the horse also on top of that.

Free loan is having just the horse and just having to pay for it's upkeep like a normal horse - no set fee on top of that to pay extra for having the horse also.
