Right so a friend of mine has mentioned a horse thats avalible "free to a good home" ... she told me about it on behalf of the "overhorsed (self confesed) novice owner... "

is this a dont touch it with a barge pole situation or a cautiously have a look situation!

goes without saying that a full 5stage vetting would be carried out before the horse changed hands.

Lady is passing it on as its not done anything for 2years... and she feels he is wasted... jumps apparently... dutch warmblood gelding... 16.2hh ... 14yrs....

TBH im not asking so much for me... although i would be tempted if the £££ for keep and feed etc wasnt an issue... but a friend of mine might be interested...

so what would you do??

questions to ask welcome...
would already ask things like:
Why is she parting with him?
when was he last ridden?
what stopped her riding him in the first place?
why is she giving him away rather than selling?
medical history?
about previous owners.... has he changed hands alot...
and the normal is he good to catch shoe clip load etc etc!

any guidence or words of advice welcome! x
thanks xx

There is a horse on our yard in a similar situation (its been ridden a lot owner just has too many horses and the one on our yard just came back from a trial)- ask for a trial (the owner of the one on our yard said yes) with the stipulataion that she will bring it back into work and see what its like and then if its not right and it goes back at least the woman can give it away having being ridden a bit in the past howevermany years

There's a horse like him in adtrader. I would be worried if he hasnt done much work - simply because this may be due to regular work = lame horse. Not sure how the vetting would assess this.

i got my boy for free because he was to much or his novice owner. he is the best horse i ever owned and i have had lots of offers to buy him the last being this summer even though he was 17 at the time.

just go in with your eyes wide open

i got my boy for free (well £1 for legallity sake) & even with his "special" issues he is the best thing to happen in years.

i love him with all my heart & i dont mind the hard work he needs, i got him from a good friend but would do it again.
go in with your eyes wide open & trust your instints (if it feels wrong ect....)

I was talking about this to a friend the other day, it seems people can't give horses away at the moment, she needs to sell a pony but has had no response from any ad's, she will have to either give him away to a friend or trade him in and lose money.

This time of year is not a good one to have too many horses, people can't cope so would rather they went free to a good home than spend out on advertising and the hassle just to find out there is no one interested!

i got my first boy for free (although I paid a pound) and he was the best thing I had done, he was oppinonated, with soundness issues (although the prognosis when I got him was good).....go in with your eyes open, trust your instincts as Aoibhin says and definatly leave the heart at home

I got my anglo arab for free in October/november last year. The girl i share one of my horses with knew his owner, she was v ill and couldn't look after him anymore. The lady asked my friend if she new anyone that could be trusted to give him a nice home that would look after him forever. She said Yes me! She rang and asked me if i was interested to which i was as we were looking for a safe hack for my OH and company for my mare so we went to see him and that was it. I tried him and he was a true gent,he's never been sick or sorry and my OH fell in love with him. He came with everything, lovely saddle and rugs and has never put a foot wrong,he is a bit grumpy and is def the boss of the field but is a stunning ride,he floats!!! I think it depends on the circumstances and if the person is genuine.

well where are all thse "free ponies!!!" if anyone has a sensible 13.2 do let me know as we never sell them on!! Sick of seeing adverts for ponies over 20 for sale....for £lots!!
