A question for all those freelance grooms out there!!

I am going to put some posters together to do some freelance work as I have been out of work for way to long!

How do you charge for the work? Do you charge by the hour or by the job? If so how much?

Thanks in advance and chocoy and tea for helping

I charge by the hour, but you need to include a clause so you can bump it up if theres loads of travelling. I'm lucky and my three jobs are all no distance.

I do differnt things differnt prices.
eg £5 for mucking out, £2.50 for turnout and travel is added on but luckily i dont need to travel far!

As a 'customer' I chose a freelance who charged by the hour - she came well recommended and I felt confident that she would 'work' for the hour if you get my drift.

However, my friend has a girl who charges by the job and only does the sepcified tasks allocated.

It is a matter of preference and trust in my view. If mine have kept their stables tidy (rare) I know that some other jobs will be done whether that be sweeping the yard of filling up a load of haynets.

I pay £10/hour.

I think the important things is to offer value for money whatever you charge, be prepared to do the dread (ppo picking type) jobs as well as the more fun ones and have a postive cheerful disposition so people like having you around and you should be fine.

I charge by the job, which makes it much more bearable. My "proper" job is working on a livery yard, paid by the hour, and I have to work almost every minute I'm there. I do a few horses for some friends on one of my mornings off, as a freelance groom, and I know I can take my time over mucking out if I want to because as long as it's done, it doesn't matter. It makes it a lot less stressful than my "proper" job thar way! I think it also helps that they are friends and don't mind if I take all day, as long as I do a consistently good job
