Could someone share a few thoughts with me please?

I work freelance and I am currently without a freelance insurance until July (in the process of registering with the BHS Register of Instructors and taking up their policy). Due to this I have cancelled most of my private clients leaving only a few who has been with me for a couple of years. Most of my teaching at the moment is in three BHS Approved Centres (one being a Where To Train centre) so I am insured via them should anything happen.

I am, however, being told from every angle to postpone even those few riders until I have my insurance again.

So, a few questions:
1) Would you teach without being insured if you know the horses/riders well?
2) Do you have your own accident report book of some sorts?
3) Should freelance instructors fill in RIDDOR forms?

AND one more Q: Do you check with your trainer/instructor whether they are insured and would you have lessons with an uninsured one?

Many thanks!

The BHS approved schools should have a policy that covers you providing you are working for them. Check and ask fo a copy of their latest dated policy.

Under no circumstances should you teach anyone without having full insurance cover and having taken a valid first aid course. If you are teaching children or vunerable adults you also need to have taken a Child Protection Course.

I hope this helps as teaching without insurance could open you up to clams that could financially ruin you for life or even result in a spell at Her Majestys Pleasure so please do not teach until you have full insurance cover in place.

Seems a bit of a risk not to teach your clients til July. What about using SEIB freelance insurance til then. You may be able to get a 6 month deal or do a year and get a refund (maybe lose a bit) for the months you cancel?

You have to take out a full year wuth SEIB with no refunds, it's arond £300. I tried to get a shorter period whilst waiting to go on the register but they wouldn't do it.

Thank you for this .
Yes, I do know I am covered at the centres which is why I am not worried about that. I was specifically asking about my private clients, not the centres.
You are actually saying what I seem to be told from everywhere around me

Looks like it really would be silly to take a risk.
What really amazes me is that I know plenty of people teaching without being insured!
I do have CP Certificate.
