Although I said I would never ever ever buy anything with the word Rover on it, I have noticed they seem to be a good price, what are they like for towing with either the 2.0td4 or the petrol V6, would it tow my double trailer with a pony feed and tack ?

Personally I think they're as much use as trying to tow with a mini - utterly useless, probably one of the reasons why theres lots of cheap ones around! :)

Think the newer models (mini range rover type) are better than the older ones. The older ones are no use for towing at all.

Depending on what trailer you have and the pony's weight, you may be ok. This is a gem of a site for checking braked towing weight limits and full spec by year and version (and easy to use!): http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/ Enter your make and model then click 'More info' for the version you want.

I have friends with Freelanders - two have the older shape (I think TD4 but don't quote me) and will tow with one small horse but wouldn't with two. One of them also has one of the new shapes (59 reg) and it's far better, I'm told, and I tows two horses in a 510 with no problems.

Funny how things work out, since posting this my youngest lad phoned me to go have a look at a car he's interested in, while chatting to the car salesman I mentioned my interest in a Freelander, he said to steer well clear as they are crap and a joke in the trade, so that's that then, my lifelong hatred of Rover still stands.

I have one, an 04 td4, no problem so far. tows very well, but i would not tow two. it feels very firm on the road when towing and i was pleasantly surprised on the motorway. comfortably went along at 60 at 2rpm. i am looking to get a new ifor single at the mo as i only tow one anyway.
It has the exact same towing capacity as a hyundai santa and everyone raves about those. but i would be lying if i said the landy was the most reliable thing ever, it has its quirks... but, i have been lucky so far!

i must say, i was completely anti freelander untill my friend got one. then i drove one and loved it. Taught me not to always agree with what others say.

Was it drink or have you taken a blow to the head ????:D

Don't care what the majority say, I adore my freelander, bought it for a song as it needed a new engine (ahem!... Head gasket gone of course) but OH is a mechanic and we bought an engine off eBay and he fitted it.

It gets me up the farm tracks, goes nicely off road, can carry lots of pony nuts in the boot, nice leather seats, air con, and touch wood hasn't let me down yet.

BUT!

I wouldn't tow the horses with it, use OH's navara for that, have towed 20 bales of hay with it and it was fine.

Do get slightly sick of every single person looking at it and going "oooohhh, head gasket'll go in that y'know"

Yes I know!! ;)

Exactly as said above, I LOVED my old freelander, as a 4x4 it was brilliant, but I also would not have towed horses with it - so when we changed from a lorry to a trailer I got rid of the freelander (sob sob) and bought a jeep cherokee - which I now love as much as my old landy.
