I had a freelander but now tow with a shogun, the difference is scary I didn't realise how much it struggled and that was with my skinny 15.3 old boy and a bateson ascot which I belive is lighter than an ifor.
We tow a 16.2 tb type with a freelander and ifor and it just about copes, but to tow anything heavier I don't think the freelander would have enough power.
When will folks stop using non tow cars to tow horses? They are fine with caravans, which weight diddly squat in comparison. An Ifor 505R has a MGW of 2340Kg which is what the police will go off if you are in a crash. For every Kg over the towing limit you will be fined about £20 x 340 = a lot of money. And your horse may not even survive.
Before you laugh, I personally know of a Freelander + 505R outfit which went over - more than once - with a 12.2 in it.
Discovery, Shogun, Jeep Cherokee and the ilk are what you need to be looking at.
My new freelander arrives next week - they are a completely different car to the last one, different engines and towing capabilities.
My friend has one and easily tows her IW510 and her 16.2hh. They really can only tow one horse legally and to be honest I wouldnt even attemped 2.
We took my 17.2 out in the 510 on sunday in the freelander and it pulled him without any problems and he is a very big boy.
How can the police fine you for a weight that your not even carrying ? surely thats not correct? I have been doing lots of towing reading recently on the dvl and thats not mentioned anywhere ! Saf can you help on this one before my new car arrives !
when you a re buying a towing car for towing horses
make sure when you go into the garage or dealer that you dont just say i want to tow a box,,,,,, they think you mean a camping trailer -- or a trialer to them its a camping trialer or simular size always state -- your going to tow two horses
in a horse box trialer
free landers a re for sporting yuppies that go shooting
etc or caravaning they area sports 4x4 and not a work horse 4x4 they cannot tow a horse box as there towing weight is way below -- and its not listed on the dlva towing regualrtions
so if youare caught at the show ground by a defra agent then you are stuffed as you wont be able to tow your horse home
as your vechile isnt license to
