Off my last post it seems freelanders are out of the question for towing so can you please suggest what to get for towing a ifor HB510 and 1 17.2 ID about 660kg?! I have all my B+E class 1 and 2 so that's not a problem I just want to try and find as low engine size as poss. Thanks :-)

hiya,

I am going to have the exactly same dilemma as you, as jeep cherokee is a good work horse and comes in 2.5, although expensive on parts or a land rover disco?x

HB510 - unladen weight 1000 kgs
1000+660=1660 so you need a 4X4 with at least a 1700 capacity but I would suggest, as you have B+E, you get one with a towing capacity of 2000+ so it allows you to load a bit more in the trailer

I can suggest this one because many on a B only licence seem to use it without problems -

Nissan X trail (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1515
GVW = 2050
Towing = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1450 kgs

Another X-trail fan.

Has the muscles to tow my draft x (in my single trailer) and still economical enough to run without bankrupting me.

Xtrail definatly , i only tow about once a month and most of my running around is school runs and to the yard etc , had it for 2 years and has'nt bankrupted us yet !

Another vote for the X Trail - I've had mine for a couple of months now and I love it! I have to use it daily for visiting the yard then commuting to and from work. It's not thirsty on diesel and the big bonus is that it pulls my trailer brilliantly:D

What about a Defender? Easy to maintain, massive tow capacity. They don't look fashionable but by heck they do the job! We've towed everything - including horse boxes and stuck trailers with thier tow cars still attached. The defenders just keep going.

But my YO has a mitsubishi warrior she is quite fond of. Never driven one myself.

Xtrail - my friend has one for day to day running and towing, and i like it so much, that when my litte car goes to the scrap heaven later this year, this is what im looking to buy.

I am torn between the X-trail and the Santa Fe. Both have the same tow capacity etc. I am also looking for something for one horse that doesn't cost the earth to run as I have a bit of a commute.

Santa Fe is less 'prestige' and you can you can get them dirt cheap :)

Thanks for the replies everyone, it seems x-trail has a lot of fans, my OH works at Nissan as a mechanic and he seems to have another opinion about them but he doesn't own 1 and has no towing experience.
Having spoken to a few people locally about freelanders it seems that they aren't as bad as I thought, one person tows a 510 with a 17hh irish draught and they have no probloems at all!
Still befuddled with it all but I appreciate all the replies, thanks.

Hi I have a freelander (new shape one) and it can tow 2.2 ton so a 510 and one horse should be ok I wound not like to do to many hills. And they are cheaper to tax than a disco to.
