In the process of swapping my car for a 4x4 to pull a single Ifor 401.

I was wondering what people's experiences are of the 2.0 diesel Freelanders? In terms of kerb weight and towing capacity, they meet the criteria but I've heard they can be quite unreliable?

Would be interested to hear from anyone :)

Thanks x

We have one for towing and it does the job :)

The major let down with the freelander is the electrics, parking sensors broke, air con broke, radio broke and they all decide when and where they want to work and the sun roof jammed open all in the cold weather. Lights flash on and off when you go over bumps, but I do love our car :)

My OH has one but can't comment towing wise as only tow a caravan. Reliability wise it's been spot on and he's had it about 5 years. Nothing major gone wrong although like jcoombs the air con packed up and also it steams up big time. We drove 2hrs today in the rain and had to the blower on full power the whole time, really bugs me but don't know if this is just his car or a universal problem.

:) thanks. Out of interest what year are your cars? I really like the Freelanders and because I passed my test after 1997 (and have a limited budget!) can only really get one of these or an X-Trail.

2004. I love driving his car. I always had fourtraks when I towed. Just becareful as it's a very easy car to speed in. I'm normally captain slow when I drive but in the dunglander I'm always having to watch the speedo.

I rate ours very highly but we are selling it - PM me if you are interested. It's black, 55 reg TD4 Diesel. Never towed with it as no bar but easy to have one put on.......

Yes and am currently selling mine (2005 reg) !!!! - I have towed my single ifor with it and it didnt even notice the trailer was there!!! - now bought a horsebox.
Mines an auto which meant the gear changes were far smoother for the horse and with a single trailer you are easily within towing weights for law.

If looking at a freelander only get a TD4 the older engines are cr*p. - very nice to drive though and handle well on road. - good thing about a single trailer is its exactly same width as the freelader so if car fits thru gap so does trailer!!!!

I've just bought one two weeks ago :D very exciting just got to save up for a trailer and then will be able to please myself! It was 6k on a 05 plate. So far can't really comment in its reliability etc but avoid the pre BMW engines - so pre 04 these apparently have serious unreliability issues!

Remember the GVW ... there are different models
GVW 2080 which is ok for B towing
GVW 2500 no good for B towing for what you need it for
