Hi, I'd like to hear your experiences/opinions on freeze branding. Am I right that it doesn't seem to be as popular as it was? From what I've heard microchipping isn't very secure as they're not often checked: I think a visible mark is more off-putting to thieves, but it seems a shame to scar my horse...

It is of course a more visible deterrent than micro-chipping, but if you feel you are 'scarring' your horse then it obviously isn't the method for you! I have two of my horses marked with Freezemark Ltd's personalised marks of 2 digits which I think looks nice and neat. I wouldn't have the 4 digits as that looks 'too much' to me, but it's just personal preference. Microchipping with a c mark is another option or hoof brands.

Freeze marking is the only real way to beat the theives, all of ours are marked. When i get my new horse it will be first on the things to do list. Microchipping is ok but loads of microchipped horses still get stolen and most auctions dont scan the horses before a sale, and not all scanners read all microchipps so it seams a bit pointless to me really.

Have had all my horses done by Farmkey, first thing I do when I purchase a horse..........guess only thoughts on this is some people can distort the markings, say if you had a 'C' in the freeze turn it to an 'O' but think can be difficult, but it has been known!

Had mine done about a month ago....mark is coming along nicely now.

I wanted a visible deterrant rather than a microchip.

We do a lot of showing with one of ours...the mark is under his saddle area but you can have it done under the mane if you wish.

Thanks for all your comments, very useful, and for the link to your previous post, GC. I'll talk to the companes that do it and see what they offer.
