Freeze Mark question!

How long does it take for a freeze mark to heal after its first been done? Are there any down sides to freeze marks? Ive never had one done before, have had horses with brands, but never free marks.
Im considering having it done on some youngstock who are living out for the next year and thought it would be a theft deterant as the field is out of sight from my house.
They will be done on their backs as hopefully I will show them when they are older.

I had a horse freezemarked this time last year. Wasn't how I expected it at all!

Had it done under the saddle area. No riding for a few days- but no visible scabs etc. Looked the same, no hair dropped out or anything,
about 3 weeks or so later white hair started coming through and it was ages before the freezemark fully came through.

Better safe than sorry I always think.
