My horse is grey so it's on her shoulder, but I had my chestnut pony done when I had her and it was under the saddle - purely for the reason that it couldn't be seen while I was sat on her (for dressage etc.). On a grey it isn't much noticable on the shoulder either. But obviously you don't have a grey, so I'd suggest under the saddle!
I had my mare done under the saddle - much more subtle there. I think under the saddle is more of a problem with greys as they have to leave the brands on longer to kill the hair off completely.
i voted shoulder area simply because that is where we got george freeze branded. of course it means a week off work but it can also be covered up with a saddle for dressage / showing classes. they tend to mark greys on the shoulder simply because on greys the hair doesnt grow back and so its better to have bald bits on the shoulder rather than under the saddle area
I do think freezemarking is much more effective that microchip. freeze marking is a visual detereent to theifs and of course is permanent so (god forbid) should your horse ever be stolen there is a way to alert others as to who he is and of course prove he is yours.
we have just bought a 3yo out of race training and until closely inspecting her wetherbys passport would never have known she was microchipped.
branding can be an uncomfortable experience for them. of course the person doing the brand will be experienced and will advise you what to do. we did georges in his box with me holding the leadrope and letting him walk in a small circle as he wanted when each letter was being applied and it all occured without too much fuss. i *think* (though correct me if im wrong as my memory isnt great!) that he has about a a week / week and a half off before we rode him again and was absoluely fine

[/ QUOTE ] I must say all of mine have accepted the freeze-marking without any fuss whatsoever.
If you want to keep the appearance of your animal the same then I would freezemark under the saddle. It's not visible when showing & doing dressage. You will have to rest the horse for a while though after marking. I'm not sure for how long?
On coloureds you normally try & freezemark a dark section. As for Grey horses after a while the mark is virtually invisible so it matters little where you do it.
I have always had it done in a visible area; ie. the shoulder. I can't really see much point having it somewhere that it will be hidden for most of the time it is in public. I suppose it depends a lot on whether you are used to seeing horses branded or marked in some form. I've always been used to seeing brands so I think it quite normal to also see freezemarks.
I had my roan pony done on his shoulder as he was darker there. I have got a grey now that will also be done on her shoulder as this is where it will show up more, although in your case under the saddle would be fine, but i think it does require longer off work. Just to add too, my pony went mad when he had it done, but all the others were fine so just be on guard.
So I went for the saddle area in the end, just for my own vanity in case I show her in the future.
She was ok, a bit stroppy as the first one went on so got told off to which point she kicked the wall
Anyway with the help of miraculous meadow treats she soon settled for the rest of them and didn't barge just kept lifting her legs. The lady from Farmmkey was excellent though so she is now all done and has to have 1 week off ridden work. Felt a bit apprehensive at first as I felt I have defaced her
Hurk has his on back because he used to be shown under saddle and it looks better. Murph and Kate also had theirs on saddle patches, only one I have ridden with one on the shoulder is a pally.
One of mine has a micromark, which is a horseshoe shape to indicate that she has a microchip, and I had it done under the saddle, as she is dark bay and it would have spoiled her appearance to have it on the shoulder.
With passporting, I think it's accepted most horses are now microchipped, so I haven't had the other neddy micromarked. I really don't like freezemarks, sorry to be controversial.
Hi, Lucy, I went for the saddle area with Spy because in the end I am also a bit vein so when she is ridden it cannot be seen. Now this is not necessarily the best advice as to get the best protection I think it is good to have it on the shoulder so that it CAN be seen even when the horse is tacked up. Personal preference succeeded with me in the end, ...
My girl is micro chipped but i want a freezemark as i dont think the micro chip holds any clout against theives, but a freezemark will, so once i have some money in the new year i will get it done
osiris is both frezzemarked and micro chiped..
wombat is frezzemarked, so is krystle.. the only one that insnit is Eremo he is micro chiped... and branned by his breeder
I had Patches done a month ago. Her mark is scabby now. She was done on her shoulder though as she's grey. I didn't have much choice.
However, I think I'd still have done it on the shoulder as it's more visible. Either way, I don't view it was defacing her, more protecting her from theft.
