I posted on the Freezemarking posts today that I was / had my mare freezemarked today. She is microchipped but I decided I would like her FM as well as an extra deterrant against theft. My mare is a grey and so had to have a "bald mark" done.

She was done by a lovely lady from Farmkey. Being that she was grey I was given the choice of on the shoulder or behind the saddle - where a saddlecloth would cover but the saddle would not be sat on. I had already clipped her shoulder last night and so went with that.

My mare is a sensitive soul and not small at 16.2 so I was very worried about how she would react, but she was absolutely fine. The irons were on for a lot longer than I expected (again due to her being grey and getting a "bald mark"). She was done held outside her stable and simply leaned into the side of the stable to try to get away from the irons. She got a bit fed up and moved back and forward a few steps a couple of times but the lady just moved with her. I did bury her head in a bucket of food throughout and think I was more upset about the whole thing than the horse was! The lady said greys often don't like it due to the length of time the irons are on and that my girl was very good

These pics were taken approx 15 mins after marking - the no is 9VE1. I'm thinking the 9 looks a bit like a "3" but will wait and see how it comes out.

This is what is looked like approx 6 hours after marking, the characters are no longer recognisable and there are just 4 swollen lumps:

This is my geldings freezemark 8U87 done under the saddle over 14 years ago before I bought him:

And lastly my brave girlie posing in the sun after her ordeal!

Hi had a similar experience with my 16.3 grey gelding. I was told that because the mark would be bald on a grey, that the best place was the shoulder.

He has had it done 3 times now because he has the hide of a rhino and then some.

The swelling will go down and the letters will scab over. Do not pick them off! I rode my gelding after 2 days. He is also microchipped, but I also wanted something visual as a deterant and easily identifyable.
