Keep meaning to get it done but haven't so far! Will freezemark though, think it's more of a deterrent but don't know whether to have the youngsters done as after all, they are for sale and it might put buyers off.
Had my coloured mare Microchipped about 2yrs ago and am now going to get her freezemarked too. I have been hearing too many stories of stolen horses, most of which seem to be coloureds (another livery also brought her gypsy friend up the yard to see her new horse. They saw mine and started asking if it was a mare etc...). Didn't have her freezemarked before as only suitable black patch is under the saddle, so won't be able to ride for a while (this doesn't seem important now).
The bay one has a microchip.
IMO if the horse is chipped there needs to be a freezemark which shows the horse is chipped otherwise you have no idea that they are. Will be getting the 2 chestnuts freezemarked in the near future because it is more of a detterent than a chip
Hurk is freezemarked, non of the others are. Vet said there was no point doing Oshka because he has his own freezemarking going on, unique thing he is!
I'm having my white horse done on the 11th November.
They have to have the mark left on longer to create a bald mark. For that reason they can only be done on the shoulder as it could cause a saddle to rub if they were done up by the wither.
My nickname's always been Bella so I'm having 8ELA on her. Shame I didn't realise she couldn't be done under her saddle before I reserved the mark.
Dead right. My retired horse was microchipped and sold as a companion. He didn't have the mircomark on him to show he was chipped.
New owners sold him the next day through Beeston market under a new passport that Farmkey issued at the ring side. No one checked him for a micrchip that would have revealed his identity and also keeps details of his injury.
My daughter's pony is chipped but she's about to have a micromark on her shoulder to let people know. It's the same price as a normal freezemark so they are going to assess what room she has for a standard freezemark on her shoulder (she's grey so can't go under her saddle) as she's only 11.2. If she can't, then it'll be a mircomark.
They'll find a place on the shoulder where they can mark so each letter/digit is on a single colour patch, if you see what I mean. My grey is marked bald, but not very well and her winter coat has grown over it (just off to clip it all off though!). But yes it can be done!
OOOH - you're all making me think now - with 3 coloureds that are unchipped and unmarked in the field. I just think freezemarks are unsightly and I usually microchip - suppose I should do that then,
Sid was both - only due to me being overly-paranoid by the huge amount of pikeys in my area!
New girly will probably only get her chipped - Like Oshk I don't there's any point with her!
£47.95 with Farmkey if 2-4 horses being done. £55.95 if only having one horse done. Additional discounts for bigger groups. Think there is another firm, that also freezemark, but not sure what they are called, or what they charge.
My horse is microchipped......but Freezemarks give a visual deterent to theft obviously a microchip cannot be seen. I've no plans to freezemark in addition to his chipping though.
My boy is microchipped and freezemarked with a micromark. Although my vet did say, to my total horror, that's an unusual freezemark. I had to explain to him what the micromark was. I wouldn't mind but he events at advanced level so I figure if he doesn't know what hope for the average horse vet. Not sure how worthwhile they actually are.........
Was trying to decide what to have, Micromark or Freezemark, think you have just made up my mind to go for a full freezemark, even though she is Microchipped too.
My 3 are all microchipped - personally don't like the look of freeze marks. Oh yer and the dog is microchipped as well!!! Also know of a lot of horses who through the years have been unable to read the mark correctly. Our vet also told us about some cases where thieves would change the branding so in discussion with the vet we decided that microchipping was better for us).
On the horses field gate and stable I've got laminated signs to say they are microchipped (try to deterent the thieves). The vet checks the microchips every 6 months when she does the injections to check they are still working / in place.
I suppose at the end of the day its personal preference

There is Freezemark Ltd, in the Banbury area, offer a similar service, prices about the same, discounts for Horsewatch members. This is Mary Awre's company, she started freezemarking over 20 years ago with the company who later became Farmkey so there is plenty of experience there.
