freezemark or chip?

my boys freezemark has disappeared due to his change of colour. It needs re doing am not sure whether to get him micro chipped this time instead. Has anyone encountered any problems with chipping or having freezemarks redone. Is there one data base for chips or many as in cats and dogs???
Would appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks.

My horse was freezemarked when I first had him as a 4 yr old. Last yr I decided to get him chipped when his annual booster was done. It was a quick procedure - Vet shaved the area, I think she gave him some local anaesthetic, then inserted the chip in the crest of his neck. It looked much bigger than the chip in cats but he did not mind in the slightest. And yes, as a result of that she gave me paperwork which means he is on a database.
I would recommend but you should bear in mind that a freezemark is visible to possible thieves whereas a chip is not.

Freezemarks can be redone, contact Freezemark or Farmkey, whoever originally did it, there may not even be a charge, or at least a reduced rate (not their fault the horse changed colour but worth a try)

Yes, I had to get my horse's FM re-done - I don't think there was a charge at the time.

Personally i think microchipping is becoming more popular nowadays. Its really quick to do aswell.

I think the only advantage of freezemarking is there is a visable deterent to thiefs that the horse can be easily identified

What bigger reason could you want than to prevent your horse being stolen in the first place?
Yes, there are several scanners for microchips, so they will not always be picked up.
I had to have one mare's freezemark re-done and it was free, but I think there is a time-limit of one year otherwise you need to pay, but check that out to be certain.

To help you put the cost of freezemarking in perspective - it is about the same as a full set of shoes, and very few people would put the farrier off.

I'm having Thumper chipped - being grey, you just wouldn's see a freeze mark on him I don't think.

I have both and had Cairo's freezemark redone as with the years it was no longer clear. I had another mark done on the opposite side to the original. Mine have chips and marks.

You would, they do a bald mark on greys so the skin colour will show, you would just need to keep that area clipped

My mare is chipped, and I've just had her freezemarked as well. Apparently, horses are not always scanned at sales, but a freeze mark is far more obvious, it cost £46 and too about 25 minutes.

My grey is freeze marked and it shows when clipped, doesn't help much in the winter though as she gets a very fluffy coat!!!
