As a horse was stolen near to us (definetly not a hoax as we know people from the yard) we have freezemarking and microchip sessions booked. I have a jumping mare and was going to get her freezemarked on her saddle area. however the majority seem to be going for microchipping. Is freezemarking now not popular or is it more for non-showing people (which would explain it as my yard is full of horse and ponies for showing). thanks

I had mine Micro-Chipped and then had her Freezemarked as wanted a more visible deterrent. If I was having it done again I would just go for a Freezemark, I think.

Mine both have both......

My coloured mare has her freezemark on her side as it was one of the only brown patches suitable!!

I also have a 'personalised' freeze mark, so hopefully they look *waaaay* too chav for anyone to steal!

I would definatley go for a freezemark as they have been know to locate the microchip and cut it out, they are not going to be able to do this to a freezemark. I have a friesian and show loads, they can not mark you down for having a freezemark. I always have it done on the saddle area as you wont see it unless you are doing a inhand class. However i know my friends with Welsh D's have in done under the mane, you cant see it at all.

Freezemarking is a much more sensible option. Too may types of scanner and too few scanners and Freezemarking is a good VISIBLE deterent,.

My pony has both, and a personalized freeze-mark to boot. I had her done at 18 months old, so no problems with not being able to ride with freezemark being in saddle area. My cats are also chipped, and I'm looking to get my saddle done as well by datatag. Rugs all have my post code spray painted on with hammerite, as are all my jumps, but would really like to get them etched, but looks like I will have to take them to the police officer who does that.

my girl has been micro-chipped for a long time, but i have been meaning to get her freeze marked as i think its a better deterrent, its just a case of getting the pennies together for it

I went for the freeze marking option as I wanted to put people off stealing mine in the first place and because I hope that it would be more likely that he would be returned to me - he is registered with farmkey as well.

Freezemarking on the shoulder is the best option by far as a freezemark can be read by anyone so a stolen horse can be easily identified. Freezmarking on the shoulder has two advantages it can been seen when ridden and the horse is out of action for a shorter period of time.

Also take a photo of your horse from each of its four sides (Summer and Winter) so that in the event of your horse being stolen you can circulate photos of it.

The issue with micro-chipping is that there are about 6 different systems and the scanner of one system does not recognise all the other systems.
