Freezemark- would you complain??

Just wondered if I could have some opinions in case I'm making a mountain out of a molehill!

About 15 months ago I had my two horses freezemarked, my bay was fine- freezemark is beautiful and I have no issues. My chestnut however is a different story- after the marking he was not ridden for 2 weeks (more than they recommend) and I followed all care instructions to the letter. After 3 months his mark was still bald whilst the bay's was fully grown so called the company who told me to bathe in salt water daily and ride with a thick numnah for a month which I did. Some hairs grew through but nothing major so I recontact company who send someone out to look, he says just wait but mutters something about chestnuts being more sensitive and possibly the irons were left on too long. So, I give it time, winter coat grows through and a few more hairs come but now with his summer coat the mark is practically bald again and I'm having to suncream the areas that are pink. I suspect that this will be the situation now forever and whilst I'm glad that I had it done I'm not pleased that I will be suncreaming all the time in summer.

I've been thinking about complaining to ask for some compensation but wondered if others would do the same?? (I'm not terribly good at making a fuss

Sorry its so long!!

It does indeed sound as if the irons were left on too long, in which case the situation will not change.
No harm in complaining, they may refund you the cost of doing it.
Don't suppose you would PM me the company that did it?

I've tried cornucresine and sudocrem but was told by the company not to use anything but saltwater and to be honest neither made much difference.

Camrosa... well I know alot of people swear by it and I've seen excellent results but I've also seen some not so good results/reactions and as such I'm not willing to put it on his back.

My horse was freezemarked in november and whilst most of the hair has come through white, there are still a few bald patches which look like theyre never going to have fur growing through. I have wondered if this was normal but as you can make out the freezemark I havent really done anything about it.

I do think you should ask for compensation though as the freezemark has gone wrong. I wouldnt take their 'chestnut horse' theory as an excuse though as my horse is bay and a similar thing has happened with him.

When I bought my pony 12yrs ago she was already freezemarked on her shoulder. It's always been bald and in summer burns. It can be a complete nightmare and has to be smoothered in sun cream. I'm afraid I can't suggest anything except high factor suntan cream as my pony's blisters if left. I would certainly be expressing my displeasure to the company.

The same happened to my friends horse, who is skewbald by the way, and she had it done on a brown patch. She got someone to come out to have a look, they too mumbled some rubbish and said to wait awhile. She got back in touch soon after to say how unhappy she was and got an apology and a full refund which is some consolation, but not much as she now has bald letters/numbers than have to have suncream on, and its on his shoulder!

A refund is all well and good, but isn't going to compensate for a botched marking! I'd be livid. At least if it had been on the shoulder you wouldn't have to worry about potential pain with scar tissue when ridden. It is shocking, and the company's attitude seems a bit lax.

To see if there is any validity in what Freezemark said about Chestnuts being sensitive skinned why don't you phone 'Farmkey' & speak to them under the pretext of booking a branding & ask them questions about this?

Got to be worth a go, at least you will know what will have caused the problem?

Thanks Sooty, I must say we lost a whole summer competing because I didnt want to put too much pressure on it jumping, I'm not happy but just so bad at standing up for myself although I will do in this case as its not on at all.

Toby_Zaphod- good idea, I'll give all the companies a ring then I can compare what they all say with the info from the company that did the mark- I'm not naming who did it on an open forum as I was very happy with everything they did including the bay's freeze mark, just a shame about the chestnuts!

I have a grey with pink skin who needed a bald freezemark, for obvious reasons. Hers hasn't been very successful because they didn't leave them on for long enough to kill the hair follicles. Two of her letters aren't really legible. I had them back out to re-do it, but was told it wouldn't work as scar tissue would prevent the hair from burning off now.

I would've thought it incredibly difficult to accidentally leave them on for too long so would certainly complain. Patches were on for a good two or three minutes to attempt the bald mark. She's pink skinned.....it doesn't come any more sensitive.

Edited to add: When I had P done I was expressly told a grey can only be marked on the shoulder as you absolutely cannot have the bald skin under the saddle as it could rub...which is pretty obvious really. I would complain on that theory alone. Surely they should be more cautious of that reaction in an under the saddle mark.
