Hey, I've very recently bought a horse I had on loan, a rising 4yr old Welsh D.

I'm thinking of getting him freezemarked, and wondered how much of a deterrant it actually is. Is it worth it? And also, looking on the farmkey website they also do a mircromark - a little horseshoe brand to show the horse is microchipped - again do you think it's that worth it?

And if I did, where would be the best place - saddle area or shoulder?

Thanks in advance

Oh, and a picture of the handsome devil himself :)

Yup,....my boy's done...had him done as a 4 year old. Didn't go down the microchip route,...was happy with a mark on the saddle area.

Peace of mind for me and i've had a total stranger comment and say...'oh so you're keeping him then' (clocked the freezemark on him).. makes you wonder why they were eyeing him up in the first place doesn't it!

Mine are microchipped and also have a full freeze mark. Mares is a personalised one. If you have a mare, coloured, mini or anything unusual then I would belt and braces it because they are the targets.

I don't see why anyone wouldn't, it makes a big difference to theft rates and recovery rates and you really really don't 'see' if after a couple of months, it's just part of the horse.

Mine is freezemarked, with the first part of his name. He's a coloured gyspy cob so I definitely feel a lot safer having had it done. I keep the patch clipped so its visible, he's very hairy so it can blur it a lot.

I paid upfront for the first 3 yrs registration too.

Thank you for your comments, I will definitely get him done now.

Another point - shoulder or saddle area?

And thanks Cobsgalore - I'm proud of him :)

My bay pony was but my appaloosa is not. She's a grey but the lightest of white with pink skin over most of her shoulders and back area. Would it be worth the money to get her done? I've known greys to have it and yet seen nothing on anything but close scrutiny.

I had my filly done at 20 months old. I rang up when I bought her at 8 months old and was told they needed to be 12-18 months old to be done or a bit older if they were likely to be 16hh +.
She is also Microchipped

Here she is sporting her 'number plate' day it was done

And how it looks now

Id rather make every effort to deter thieves than not.

Yes even though an idiot on the yard told me it would 'ruin' my horse. Told her that being stolen, passed around or sold for meat would 'ruin' him more.

As much as I'd love to, I have a piebald (black face, black tail, everything else pure white) and a grey. The black I've only had since December but I guess he'll be done at some point.
